FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Kirriemuir

FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Kirriemuir are prepared under the financial reporting framework that applies to companies which qualify for, and choose to apply, the UK micro-entities regime. FRS 105 is a reduced-disclosure, largely historical-cost framework, so the accounts look different from those prepared under FRS 102 — fewer notes, simpler measurement and a shorter set of primary statements. Professional preparation helps make sure the figures are built up properly from your bookkeeping and financial records, that the accounting policies suit your circumstances, and that the resulting financial statements are presented consistently with the framework you have chosen. It also helps you keep the accounts themselves separate from your other obligations, such as your Corporation Tax Return and your Confirmation Statement. Eligibility is not automatic, so the regime is worth reviewing each year before the accounts are finalised.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

FRS 105 Explained: The Framework Behind Micro-Entity Accounts

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities. In plain terms, it is the rulebook a qualifying company follows when it prepares its annual accounts under the micro-entities regime — the lightest set of reporting requirements available to UK companies. Under FRS 105, accounts are usually prepared on a historical-cost basis, with simplified measurement rules and far fewer disclosure notes than you would see under FRS 102. The result is a set of financial statements that still includes the key documents — a balance sheet, a profit and loss account and a small number of supporting notes — but presents them in a much more streamlined way. It is important to understand that the micro-entities regime is a choice. A company that qualifies may apply it, and FRS 105 is the standard that applies when that choice is made; a qualifying company that prefers fuller reporting can apply FRS 102 instead.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK? Qualifying for the Micro-Entities Regime

FRS 105 is intended for UK companies that qualify for the micro-entities regime and choose to apply it, which is why eligibility is always the first question. For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Those conditions are only part of the picture. Other eligibility rules and exclusions apply, and some entities are prevented from using the regime regardless of their size, so satisfying the size tests does not automatically mean a company qualifies. Eligibility is normally assessed for each accounting period, meaning a growing company should recheck its position rather than assume it can continue to apply FRS 105.

A company generally needs to meet at least 2 of these 3 conditions.

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

FRS 105 Balance Sheet

A statutory balance sheet prepared to the FRS 105 format, using the reduced disclosure the micro-entities regime allows.

Profit & Loss Account

A profit and loss account prepared for your own records and for your Corporation Tax computation, without public filing.

Required Notes & Disclosures

Preparation of the notes and disclosures required for the company's accounts under the applicable reporting requirements.

Corporation Tax Support

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts for Kirriemuir Companies

Preparing FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts is about getting the detail right: recording transactions accurately, applying the measurement rules that the framework allows, and presenting the financial statements in a format that reflects your company’s circumstances. Work typically begins with your financial records — bookkeeping, bank statements, invoices, payroll information and any asset or loan details — which are reviewed and used to build the accounts. Once prepared, the financial statements may be filed with Companies House in line with the filing requirements that apply to your company. That process is separate from Corporation Tax: the CT600 is a tax return submitted to HMRC, and it is not the same document as the accounts filed at Companies House, even though the figures are related. We explain what is being prepared, why a particular treatment has been adopted, and what still needs to be done, without overstating what any filing does or does not achieve.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard that applies to companies preparing accounts under the micro-entities regime. It is designed to be the simplest framework available to UK companies, with reduced disclosure requirements and measurement rules that are largely based on historical cost. Where FRS 105 is applied, the accounts typically consist of a balance sheet, a profit and loss account and a limited number of notes. It is a reporting framework rather than a tax regime, so it governs how the accounts are prepared and presented, not how much tax is payable.

FRS 105 can be used by companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and choose to apply it. Qualification depends on meeting the relevant size conditions and not falling within any of the exclusions that apply to the regime. Because the rules include both size tests and other eligibility restrictions, a company should confirm its position for each accounting period rather than assuming it qualifies because it is small. A professional review of the company's circumstances is the most reliable way to confirm whether FRS 105 is available and appropriate.

No. The micro-entities regime is an available accounting regime, not a mandatory one. A company that qualifies for it may choose to apply it — and FRS 105 is the standard that applies when that choice is made — but a qualifying company can instead prepare accounts under FRS 102, which offers fuller reporting. Some companies prefer the additional information that FRS 102 provides, for example where a lender, investor or group parent wants more detail. The decision is generally made by the directors, and it is worth reviewing as the business changes.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Meeting those size conditions is not the whole test, because other eligibility rules and exclusions can apply regardless of size. It is also worth remembering that eligibility is assessed for the period in question, so a company that qualified last year does not automatically qualify this year.

Both are UK financial reporting standards, but they are aimed at different sizes of company and produce different accounts. FRS 105 is the micro-entities framework: it allows simplified measurement, generally on a historical-cost basis, and requires far fewer disclosures. FRS 102 is used by a much wider range of companies and includes more detailed recognition, measurement and disclosure requirements — for example, areas such as fair value adjustments, deferred tax and financial instrument disclosures that FRS 105 does not require. The framework chosen affects the content of the accounts, so it should be selected deliberately.

Accounts prepared under FRS 105 are still annual accounts, and a company that is required to file accounts at Companies House must do so in the normal way, using the accounts and the filing option that apply to it. The format in which micro-entity accounts are filed, and the choices available when filing, are governed by the filing requirements in force at the time, and these have been changing. It is also important to note that filing accounts at Companies House is a separate obligation from filing a Corporation Tax Return with HMRC.

Yes. FRS 105 accounts are financial statements prepared under a specific accounting framework, while a CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC. They are connected — the taxable profit figure is usually based on the company's results — but they are different documents with different purposes, different recipients and different submission processes. Preparing FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts does not by itself settle the company's Corporation Tax position, and the tax return needs to be dealt with separately, along with any other filings such as the Confirmation Statement.

In most cases, preparation starts with your financial records for the period: bookkeeping or accounting software data, bank and credit card statements, sales and purchase records, payroll information, loan and finance agreements, and details of any assets the company owns or has acquired. It also helps to know the company's accounting period dates, any changes in share capital or directors, and whether there are related party transactions to disclose. If records are incomplete, part of the process is often tidying them into a reliable starting point. The more organised the information, the more straightforward the preparation tends to be.
