We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

What Is FRS 105? The Micro-Entities Regime Explained

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities. In simple terms, it is the accounting framework that applies when a qualifying company chooses to use the micro-entities regime, allowing it to prepare simpler financial statements than those required under larger-company standards. Under FRS 105, the accounts focus on the essentials — a straightforward balance sheet, a profit and loss account and supporting notes — with fewer of the disclosures and fair value adjustments that other frameworks require. The key point is that FRS 105 is an option, not an automatic label: a company must qualify for the micro-entities regime, and FRS 105 applies when that regime is the one chosen. For a Strathpeffer-based company weighing up FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts, the practical benefits are simpler reporting, clearer presentation of the numbers that matter, and financial statements that are proportionate to the size of the business.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK?

FRS 105 is for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and choose to apply it — it is not a framework open to every small company. For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company will generally need to meet at least 2 of 3 size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Meeting those conditions is necessary but not always sufficient. Other rules and exclusions apply to the micro-entities regime, and some types of company cannot use it at all, so eligibility should be checked properly against the rules for the relevant accounting period rather than assumed from turnover alone. For a business in Strathpeffer considering FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts, the practical sequence is straightforward: confirm whether the company qualifies, consider whether the micro-entities regime suits how you need to report, and then prepare the accounts on that basis.

A company generally needs to meet at least 2 of these 3 conditions.

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

FRS 105 Balance Sheet

A statutory balance sheet prepared to the FRS 105 format, using the reduced disclosure the micro-entities regime allows.

Profit & Loss Account

Required Notes & Disclosures

Preparation of the notes and disclosures required for the company's accounts under the applicable reporting requirements.

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Accounts and Accurate Financial Reporting

Well-prepared FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts start with good records. We work from your bookkeeping, bank information, invoices, expense details and any other supporting documents to build a set of micro-entity financial statements that reflects your company’s transactions and position for the period. The accounts are prepared with reference to FRS 105 and the applicable reporting requirements, and we take the time to explain the figures rather than simply handing over a document. It is worth separating the moving parts: the FRS 105 financial statements themselves, the filing of those accounts with Companies House, and the company’s Corporation Tax position, which is dealt with through a separate CT600 return submitted to HMRC. Each has its own requirements and deadlines, and each is handled on its own terms. What we can do is prepare the accounts carefully, on the basis of the information available, and make sure you understand what is being filed and why.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard designed for micro-entities. It sets out a simplified basis for preparing financial statements, with a shorter balance sheet, profit and loss account and note disclosures than the frameworks used by larger companies. It sits alongside the micro-entities regime, which is the legal framework that allows qualifying companies to report in this streamlined way. In practice, FRS 105 accounts are the financial statements produced when a qualifying company chooses that regime.

FRS 105 is intended for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and decide to apply it. Qualification is not simply a matter of being small — a company must meet the applicable size conditions and must not fall within any of the exclusions that apply to the regime. Certain types of company and entity are outside the micro-entities regime altogether. So the starting point is to check eligibility against the current rules, then consider whether the regime is the right fit for how you want to report.

No. Qualifying for the micro-entities regime does not force a company to use FRS 105. The regime is an available option, and FRS 105 is the standard that applies when that option is taken. Some qualifying companies choose to report under a different framework because of their circumstances, such as the way they present particular transactions or the needs of lenders and other users of the accounts. The important point is that applying the micro-entities regime is a choice made for the company, not an automatic outcome.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of the following 3 conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees during the period. These are the size conditions, and meeting them is only part of the picture — other rules and exclusions also apply, including restrictions on which types of entity can use the regime. Eligibility should always be assessed against the rules in force for your particular accounting period.

FRS 102 is the main financial reporting standard for UK companies and covers a much broader range of entities and transactions, including fair value accounting and a wider set of disclosures. FRS 105 is a far shorter, simplified standard written specifically for micro-entities, and it removes or restricts many of the options and disclosures found in FRS 102. Choosing between them comes down to eligibility and suitability: FRS 105 is available where the company qualifies for and adopts the micro-entities regime, while FRS 102 applies far more widely and may be preferred for other reasons.

Where a company prepares FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts, those accounts generally form part of the company's annual accounts filing obligations, which are dealt with separately from its tax filings and from the Confirmation Statement. The accounts must be prepared and then submitted through the appropriate Companies House route for the accounting period in question. Filings have their own deadlines and formats, and it is worth planning ahead rather than leaving the accounts and the filing to be sorted out at the same time.

Yes. FRS 105 accounts are the company's financial statements, prepared under the micro-entities regime. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC to report the company's taxable profits and calculate what is due. The two are linked in the sense that the accounts usually inform the tax return, but they are separate documents with separate requirements, separate submission routes and separate deadlines. Preparing the accounts does not, by itself, complete your Corporation Tax obligations.

In most cases we need your bookkeeping or accounting records for the period, details of income and expenses, bank and cash information, records of any assets and liabilities, stock or work in progress where relevant, and confirmation of any amounts owed to or by the company — including director's loan balances. It also helps to know your accounting period dates and whether there have been any significant one-off transactions. The clearer and more complete the records, the smoother the preparation process tends to be.

Filing arrangements for small and micro-entity companies have been under review, with the aim of moving more information into a digital, tagged format and reducing the amount of detail that has to be filed on the public record. Because the detail and timing of these changes can develop, it is sensible to confirm the current position when your accounts are being prepared rather than relying on older guidance. We can talk you through what the requirements mean for your company's filing.
