FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Hornchurch

FRS 105 sets out the financial reporting framework for qualifying micro-entities in the UK that choose to apply the micro-entities regime. If your company is based in Hornchurch and meets the relevant eligibility conditions, FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts can provide a simpler, more streamlined way to prepare and present your annual financial statements. Professional preparation helps ensure the accounts are built up properly from your bookkeeping records, reflect your company’s actual circumstances, and are presented in line with the disclosure requirements that apply to the micro-entities regime. It also helps you avoid the common pitfalls that arise when figures are estimated, categories are misclassified, or disclosures are omitted. Because eligibility depends on the size conditions and on other rules and exclusions, it is worth confirming your position before the accounts are drawn up, rather than assuming FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are the right fit by default.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

FRS 105 Explained: The Micro-Entities Reporting Framework

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities. In simple terms, it is the rulebook that sets out how a qualifying micro-entity prepares its annual accounts when it chooses to apply the micro-entities regime. Compared with larger reporting frameworks, it allows for a much shorter set of financial statements, with simplified formats and a reduced level of disclosure, which keeps the focus on the key figures: what the company owns, what it owes, and what profit or loss it has made. The regime is optional rather than automatic — a company that qualifies for it can decide whether to use it, and FRS 105 applies when that regime is chosen. Companies that qualify may instead prepare accounts under a different framework such as FRS 102, for example if a lender, investor or group requirement calls for more detail. Understanding which framework applies to your company matters because it shapes how the accounts look, what is disclosed, and how the numbers are measured.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK?

FRS 105 is intended for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and choose to apply it. To qualify, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions for accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Those are the headline size tests, and they are not the whole picture. Other eligibility rules and exclusions apply, and certain types of company are prevented from using the regime regardless of their size — for example, some entities that are part of a group or that carry on particular regulated activities. Meeting the thresholds alone therefore does not guarantee eligibility, and it does not oblige a company to use the regime either. If your company is based in Hornchurch and you are unsure whether FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are appropriate, the sensible approach is to review your figures, your structure and any wider reporting requirements before deciding which framework to apply.

A company generally needs to meet at least 2 of these 3 conditions.

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

Dormant & Low-Activity Companies

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Accounts and Accurate Financial Reporting

FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts should be prepared from your company’s underlying financial records and presented in accordance with the reporting requirements that apply to the micro-entities regime. In practice, that means starting with accurate bookkeeping, checking that the accounting policies used suit the business, and making sure the balance sheet, profit and loss account and any required notes are consistent with one another. Preparation of the financial statements and filing them with Companies House is one task; meeting Corporation Tax obligations is a separate matter, usually dealt with through a Corporation Tax Return (CT600) submitted to HMRC. The two are connected through the figures, but they are not the same filing and they follow different rules and deadlines. Working with an accountant who handles FRS 105 accounts regularly can help you keep the accounting and tax sides aligned, reduce the risk of errors or inconsistencies, and approach each filing with a clearer understanding of what is being submitted and why.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard for micro-entities. It provides a simplified framework for preparing annual accounts, with shorter formats and fewer disclosures than standards aimed at larger companies. It sits alongside the UK micro-entities regime: qualifying companies can choose to apply that regime, and FRS 105 is the standard used to prepare the financial statements when they do.

FRS 105 is available to companies that qualify as micro-entities under the micro-entities regime and then choose to apply it. Qualification is based on size conditions and is also subject to other rules and exclusions, so meeting the size tests on their own does not automatically mean a company can or should use FRS 105. Some companies are excluded from the regime entirely, for example certain regulated or group-related entities. It is worth checking your specific position before the accounts are prepared.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. These are the headline size tests, and further rules and exclusions can affect whether a company actually qualifies, so the criteria should be applied carefully to your own circumstances.

No. The micro-entities regime is an available accounting regime, not a mandatory one. A company that qualifies can choose whether to apply it. Some qualifying companies prefer to prepare accounts under a different framework, such as FRS 102, often because a lender, investor, group parent or other interested party wants more detailed information. FRS 105 applies when the micro-entities regime is the chosen route.

Both are UK financial reporting standards, but they are aimed at different sizes of company. FRS 105 is designed for micro-entities and offers simplified formats and reduced disclosure. FRS 102 is a broader standard used by many small and medium-sized companies and covers more areas in greater depth, including more measurement and disclosure requirements. The practical effect is that FRS 105 accounts are usually shorter and simpler, while FRS 102 accounts tend to be more detailed.

Company accounts prepared under the micro-entities regime are generally filed with Companies House as part of the company's annual accounts filing obligation, using the simplified formats permitted by the regime. The accounts must be prepared from the company's financial records and be consistent with the underlying bookkeeping. Filing the accounts is a separate exercise from the company's Corporation Tax Return, which goes to HMRC.

Yes. The CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC, while the FRS 105 accounts are the financial statements prepared under the micro-entities reporting framework, which are also generally filed at Companies House. They are connected because the tax return is usually built on the same underlying figures, but they are distinct submissions with their own requirements. Preparing the accounts does not by itself deal with the company's Corporation Tax obligations.

Typically you would provide complete bookkeeping or accounting records for the period, bank statements, sales and purchase records, details of any assets and liabilities, loan or hire purchase agreements, payroll information, and details of any directors' transactions or dividends. It also helps to know whether anything unusual happened during the year, such as an asset purchase or disposal, a new borrowing facility, or a change in the company's activities, because these can affect how the accounts are presented.

A newly incorporated company may qualify as a micro-entity if it meets the relevant size conditions and is not caught by any exclusion. In the first period of trading, the tests are applied to the figures that exist for that period, so qualification should be assessed on the actual numbers rather than assumed. A first set of accounts is still prepared under the chosen framework, and if the micro-entities regime applies, that means FRS 105.

The size thresholds that determine micro-entity eligibility have been updated for accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, which means some companies that previously fell outside the regime may now qualify. Companies House filing requirements have also been evolving, including a move towards more digital filing and greater consistency between the accounts filed and the figures reported for tax. Because the detail continues to develop, it is sensible to confirm the position for your own accounting period before your accounts are finalised.
