FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Buxton

If your company qualifies for the UK micro-entities regime and chooses to apply it, FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts provide the financial reporting framework you use to prepare your annual accounts. FRS 105 is the standard that applies to qualifying micro-entities, and it is designed to keep the accounts straightforward: a simple balance sheet, limited notes, and disclosure that reflects the size and nature of a small company. Eligibility is not automatic, so the starting point is always a proper check of the size conditions and any exclusions that may apply to your business. Our role in Buxton is to take your bookkeeping and financial records, confirm how the micro-entities regime applies to your circumstances, and prepare FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts that are consistent with the framework and the information you provide. That includes making sure the figures hang together, the presentation is appropriate, and the accounts are ready for the next step in your filing cycle.

I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

FRS 105 Explained: The Micro-Entities Regime in Plain English

FRS 105 is a UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities. If a company qualifies for the micro-entities regime and decides to use it, FRS 105 is the accounting framework that applies when preparing its annual financial statements. In practice, that means a much simpler set of accounts than you would see under a larger reporting framework: a balance sheet showing what the company owns and owes, a small number of notes, and recognition and measurement rules that are kept intentionally simple. It is worth being clear about one thing — the micro-entities regime is an available accounting regime, not something every small company is automatically placed into. A company first needs to meet the relevant eligibility conditions, and it then chooses to apply the regime. Once that choice is made, FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are prepared on that basis. Many directors in Buxton choose this route because it keeps reporting proportionate to the size of their business, reduces the volume of disclosure, and makes the accounts easier to read without losing the essential picture of how the company is performing.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK?

FRS 105 is intended for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and then choose to apply it. For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Meeting two of those three is the usual starting point, but it is not the whole picture. The rules include further conditions and exclusions, and certain companies are unable to use the regime regardless of how small they are. That is why eligibility should be assessed properly against your company’s own circumstances and the accounting period in question, rather than assumed from turnover alone. If your company qualifies and the regime is applied, FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are prepared on that basis, giving you a proportionate set of financial statements that reflects the size and nature of the business. In Buxton and across the surrounding area, we regularly help directors work through that assessment and decide whether the micro-entities regime is the right fit for them.

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

FRS 105 Balance Sheet

A statutory balance sheet prepared to the FRS 105 format, using the reduced disclosure the micro-entities regime allows.

Profit & Loss Account

A profit and loss account prepared for your own records and for your Corporation Tax computation, without public filing.

Required Notes & Disclosures

Preparation of the notes and disclosures required for the company's accounts under the applicable reporting requirements.

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Accounts and Accurate Financial Reporting in Buxton

Preparing FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts properly starts with good records. We work from your bookkeeping, bank information, sales and purchase records, asset details, and any loan or director’s account balances to build a set of financial statements that reflects what has actually happened in the company during the period. The accounts are then prepared in line with the FRS 105 framework and the reporting requirements that apply to your company’s circumstances, with the balance sheet and supporting notes presented clearly and consistently. It is important to separate the different pieces of your compliance calendar: the preparation of the financial statements, the filing of those accounts with Companies House, and your Corporation Tax obligations are distinct steps with their own requirements and deadlines. A Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is submitted to HMRC and is not the same thing as your annual accounts. We can help you understand how these fit together, prepare the accounts on the correct basis, and flag anything in your records that needs attention before the figures are finalised.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard for micro-entities. It sets out how a qualifying company that has chosen to apply the micro-entities regime prepares its annual financial statements, including the recognition and measurement rules and the limited disclosure requirements. It is deliberately simpler than the frameworks used by larger companies, which is why it suits very small businesses that want accounts proportionate to their size.

FRS 105 applies to companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and choose to apply it. Qualifying is a two-part test: the company needs to fall within the size conditions set out in the rules, and it also needs to avoid the exclusions that apply to certain types of company regardless of size. Because eligibility depends on your specific circumstances and the rules in force for your accounting period, it is worth reviewing your position rather than assuming you qualify.

No. The micro-entities regime is an available accounting regime rather than a mandatory one. A qualifying company can choose to apply it, and FRS 105 then applies to those accounts. Some qualifying companies instead prepare accounts under a different framework, for example where a lender, investor, or group requirement calls for more detailed reporting. The important point is that meeting the size conditions opens the option; it does not force the choice.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. A company can qualify on any two of those three. Other eligibility rules and exclusions also apply, so meeting the size conditions alone does not guarantee that the regime is available to your company.

FRS 102 is the general UK financial reporting standard used by a much wider range of companies, including small companies that do not use the micro-entities regime. It allows or requires more detailed recognition, measurement, and disclosure than FRS 105. FRS 105 is the more streamlined framework reserved for qualifying micro-entities, with a simpler balance sheet-led presentation and far fewer notes. Which one is right for you depends on your eligibility and on what users of your accounts need to see.

Annual accounts are generally filed with Companies House, and that filing is separate from your Corporation Tax return to HMRC. The content of what you file can differ from the full accounts prepared for the members, and the filing options available depend on the company and the rules in force at the time. Filing requirements and formats do change, so it is worth checking current Companies House guidance before you submit anything.

Yes, they are two different things. FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are the company's financial statements, prepared under the micro-entities framework and generally filed at Companies House. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC to report the company's taxable profits and calculate the tax due. The figures usually start from the same underlying records, but the accounts and the tax return serve different purposes and follow different rules.

Typically we need your bookkeeping or accounting records for the period, bank and credit card statements, sales and purchase information, details of any fixed assets and depreciation, loan and hire purchase balances, director's loan account movements, stock or work in progress figures where relevant, and the previous year's accounts for comparison. If your records are incomplete, tell us early — it is usually quicker to sort out gaps before preparation begins than partway through.
