FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Alnwick

If your company is considering the simplest available financial reporting framework, FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Alnwick could be the right fit. FRS 105 is the financial reporting standard that applies to qualifying micro-entities which choose to apply the UK micro-entities regime, and it allows for a streamlined set of financial statements with a reduced disclosure burden compared with larger reporting frameworks. Professional preparation helps ensure your accounts are put together appropriately for your company’s own circumstances — the nature of its activities, its transactions, its asset and liability position, and the accounting policies that suit it — rather than being squeezed into a generic template. It also helps keep the figures consistent with the underlying records and with the other filings your company is responsible for. Eligibility is not automatic, and applying the regime is a choice, so the starting point is always a proper look at your company’s size and its overall position before any decision is made.

I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

FRS 105 Explained: The Micro-Entities Regime in Plain English

FRS 105 is a UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities — the smallest companies within the UK’s company size framework. In simple terms, it is the rulebook used to prepare a company’s annual financial statements when that company qualifies for the micro-entities regime and decides to apply it. Because it is designed for very small businesses, FRS 105 keeps things deliberately straightforward: it focuses on historical cost information, limits the amount of judgement involved in valuing things, and requires far fewer notes to the accounts than standards aimed at larger companies. It sits alongside other UK standards rather than replacing them, and a company that does not qualify for the micro-entities regime — or that qualifies but would rather use a fuller framework — would normally report under something else. For a director of a small company, the practical upshot is a shorter, simpler set of financial statements that still presents a true picture of the business, prepared in line with the framework the company has chosen to adopt.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK?

FRS 105 is available to UK companies that qualify for the micro-entities regime and then choose to apply it. Qualifying is a question of size first: for accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of the 3 applicable conditions — turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Meeting those conditions is not the end of the analysis, though. Other eligibility rules and exclusions apply, and certain companies are outside the regime regardless of their size, so a company that ticks the boxes on turnover and headcount may still not be eligible. For that reason, FRS 105 should be treated as an available accounting regime for qualifying companies rather than a default that every small company falls into. If you are weighing up whether FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are appropriate for your company in Alnwick, the sensible approach is to have your figures and your circumstances reviewed against the current rules before deciding.

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

FRS 105 Balance Sheet

A statutory balance sheet prepared to the FRS 105 format, using the reduced disclosure the micro-entities regime allows.

Profit & Loss Account

A profit and loss account prepared for your own records and for your Corporation Tax computation, without public filing.

Required Notes & Disclosures

Preparation of the notes and disclosures required for the company's accounts under the applicable reporting requirements.

Corporation Tax Support

Separate Corporation Tax support can be provided where included in the agreed service. The Corporation Tax calculation is governed by tax rules rather than FRS 105.

Companies House Filing

Your FRS 105 accounts filed with Companies House in the correct format, before your accounts filing deadline.

Director Copy Pack

A full signed copy of your accounts and tax return, ready for your bank, mortgage lender or accountant records.

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Accounts and Accurate Financial Reporting

Preparing FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts properly starts with your company’s own financial records — bank transactions, sales and purchase information, payroll details, asset purchases, loans and any other balances — and then applies the recognition, measurement and disclosure requirements that go with the framework. Professional preparation means those records are reviewed, checked for completeness and consistency, and turned into a set of financial statements that reflects what actually happened in the period, including the comparative figures for the previous year. It is worth being clear about the moving parts: the financial statements themselves are one exercise, filing accounts with Companies House is a separate filing obligation, and a Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is a distinct submission made to HMRC covering the company’s tax position rather than its statutory reporting framework. Keeping those three strands aligned is one of the practical benefits of having the work handled together, and it reduces the risk of discrepancies that later need unpicking.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard that applies to companies using the micro-entities regime. It sets out how a qualifying micro-entity prepares its annual financial statements, and it is deliberately simpler than the standards used by larger companies — it is based on historical cost, avoids much of the fair value and revaluation complexity, and requires a much shorter set of notes. It is the framework, not a filing service, so it tells you how the accounts should be drawn up rather than where they go.

FRS 105 is intended for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and then choose to apply it. Qualifying is a matter of size plus the wider eligibility rules, and there are exclusions that can rule a company out even where it looks small on the numbers. It is not a framework that any company can simply opt into, and qualifying for the regime does not oblige a company to use it — applying the micro-entities regime, and therefore FRS 105, is a decision the directors make.

No. Qualifying for the micro-entities regime and choosing to use it are two different things. A company that meets the size conditions may still decide to prepare its accounts under a fuller framework, and some companies prefer to do so because of the way they are managed, financed or reported on internally. What matters is that the framework actually used is applied consistently and correctly, and that the accounts are prepared on a proper basis.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of the 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Meeting those size conditions is not by itself the whole story, because other eligibility rules and exclusions can apply depending on what the company is and what it does. Because the detail matters, it is worth having your own figures checked against the current rules rather than assuming.

Both are UK financial reporting standards, but they are aimed at different sizes of company. FRS 102 is the standard used by most small and medium-sized entities and allows for more recognition and measurement options, including fair value in certain circumstances, along with a fuller set of disclosures. FRS 105 is the micro-entities standard: it is narrower, more prescriptive and considerably shorter. The trade-off is simplicity against flexibility — FRS 105 gives you less to disclose but also fewer accounting choices.

The financial statements a company prepares are used for its statutory accounts filing, and micro-entity accounts can be filed with Companies House in the permitted format. That filing obligation is separate from the company's tax position and separate from its Confirmation Statement, which covers different information. Filing requirements for small and micro-entity accounts are changing, so it is sensible to check the current position for your own accounting period before you file, rather than relying on how things were done a few years ago.

Yes, they are two different things. FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are the company's statutory financial statements, prepared under the accounting framework and filed with Companies House. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC, which deals with the company's tax computation and liability. The accounts usually provide the starting point for the tax computation, which is why it makes sense to prepare them together so the figures line up, but the two documents serve different purposes and go to different places.

A newly incorporated company can use the micro-entities regime if it qualifies and the directors choose to apply it, and because there is no prior trading history to measure, the assessment is usually straightforward in the first period. What matters is that the company genuinely falls within the regime and that its records are good enough to prepare the accounts from. Where a company expects to grow, or where it has investors or lenders who want more detail, it is worth thinking about the framework choice early rather than switching later.

Typically you would need your bookkeeping records or a full transaction listing for the period, bank and credit card statements, sales and purchase records, payroll information and employee numbers, details of any equipment or other assets bought or sold, loan and hire purchase agreements, and any director's loan account movements. Stock or work in progress figures, VAT returns and the previous year's accounts are also useful. The clearer the records, the more efficiently the accounts can be prepared and the less time is spent on queries.
