I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares for Companies House when it has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the accounting period. They are shorter and simpler than the accounts of a trading company, because there is normally no profit and loss activity to report — typically just a balance sheet and the required notes and statements. The precise content depends on your company's circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, so it is worth confirming the correct format before filing rather than reusing whatever was submitted last year.
Broadly, a company is treated as dormant for Companies House purposes when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period. Things such as paying a filing fee or receiving a nominal amount of bank interest may be disregarded, but buying or selling goods or services, paying wages, or receiving income generally points to trading activity. The test is about the company's activity in that period, not about whether the director considers the business to be inactive, so it is sensible to look at the actual transactions on the bank account and in the records before deciding how to file.
In most cases, yes. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes generally still has to file annual accounts, unless it has been formally dissolved or a specific rule applies to it. Dormancy reduces what needs to be reported; it does not normally remove the filing requirement itself. There are some exceptions and different routes depending on the company's situation, so if you are unsure whether your company falls into one of them, it is worth checking rather than assuming no filing is due.
Yes, in most cases. A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and it is about confirming that the information held on the public register — such as directors, shareholders and registered office — is still correct. It is not an accounts filing and it does not replace one. Keeping both up to date matters, because they are distinct obligations with their own filing points, even for a company that has not traded.
They are, in both content and purpose. Trading company accounts report income, expenses, profit or loss, and usually include fuller notes and disclosures, whereas dormant accounts focus on the company's limited activity and generally consist of a balance sheet with the required statements. That does not mean every dormant company can use the same form or the same filing route. The right approach depends on the company's circumstances, and where a company qualifies, a route such as form AA02 may be used — but it is not a universal form for every dormant company.
No, they are two separate concepts, even though the word 'dormant' is used for both. Companies House dormancy is about whether the company had significant accounting transactions in the period, which affects what accounts are filed. Corporation Tax dormancy is about the company's position with HMRC and its Corporation Tax obligations, and HMRC applies its own criteria. A company can be dormant for one purpose and not the other, and filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC or resolve any tax position.
That depends on the company's position with HMRC, which is separate from its Companies House filing. A Corporation Tax Return is an HMRC obligation, not a Companies House one, and whether one is required — or whether HMRC has confirmed the company does not need to file for a period — depends on the specific circumstances. Being dormant at Companies House does not automatically stop Corporation Tax obligations. If you are unsure where your company stands with HMRC, it is worth getting that checked alongside your accounts filing.
It can, and this is one of the most common areas of confusion. Some transactions, such as certain bank charges or filing fees, may be disregarded for the purposes of the dormancy test, while others — such as trading income, wages or the purchase of goods — generally suggest the company is not dormant. Because the treatment depends on the nature of the transaction and the rules for the period, the safest approach is to review the company's records with someone who can tell you whether you are still within the dormant accounts route or whether a different filing is needed.
