I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares and files with Companies House for a financial period in which it was dormant for Companies House purposes. They are short and simple compared with trading accounts, reflecting the fact that the company had no significant accounting transactions in the period. The precise content and the filing route depend on the company's circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, not every company uses the same form or method. Dormant accounts are not the same thing as a confirmation statement, and they are not the same as a Corporation Tax Return sent to HMRC.
A company is generally treated as dormant for Companies House purposes when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period. A limited number of specific transactions are normally disregarded when testing this, such as a subscriber taking shares, certain fees paid to the registrar, and late filing penalties. If the company has bank activity, sales, purchases, or other transactions outside the disregarded list, it is unlikely to qualify as dormant for that period. Because the test turns on the exact nature of what happened in the period, it is worth checking before assuming dormant accounts are the right route.
Yes, in most cases. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes generally still has to file annual accounts for each financial year unless it has been formally dissolved or a specific rule applies to it. Being dormant is not an exemption from accounts filing. If you have stopped trading but kept the company registered, the obligation to file accounts and a confirmation statement normally continues until the company is dissolved or an applicable exception applies to your circumstances.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and it is generally due at least once every 12 months. It confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company is up to date, such as the registered office address, directors, shareholders, and the nature of the company's business. Dormant company accounts deal with the finances for the period, whereas the confirmation statement deals with the company's registered details. Keeping both in order is part of running a dormant company properly, and they are filed through different processes.
No. They are two separate concepts with different tests and different consequences. Companies House dormancy is about whether the company had any significant accounting transactions in an accounting period, which affects the accounts it files. HMRC dormancy is about the company's Corporation Tax position and whether HMRC expects a Company Tax Return for a particular period. A company can be dormant for one purpose and not the other, and filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC that the company is dormant or change your Corporation Tax obligations.
That depends on HMRC's view of the company's position for the period, not on what you filed at Companies House. Where a company is dormant for Corporation Tax purposes, HMRC may not require a Company Tax Return for that period, but you may still need to tell HMRC about the dormancy. If HMRC has issued a notice to file a return, the usual expectation is that you respond to it rather than assume dormancy covers it. Corporation Tax Returns, CT600s, VAT Returns, and payroll filings are separate obligations from Dormant Company Accounts Filing, and it is worth confirming your position with HMRC or an accountant where there is any doubt.
Typically you will need the company name and registration number, the accounting period the accounts cover, the company's registered office details, confirmation that the company was dormant for Companies House purposes during the period, and details of any transactions that took place, including any that might be disregarded under the dormancy test. Authentication details for filing with Companies House are also required. If there has been any bank activity or anything unusual in the period, that should be flagged early so the right type of accounts can be prepared. The exact information needed varies depending on the company's circumstances.
Certain specific transactions are disregarded when testing whether a company is dormant for Companies House purposes, but ordinary bank charges and other bank activity do not generally fall into that category. If money has moved through the company's bank account in the period, including small charges, it may mean the company does not qualify as dormant for Companies House for that period and a different set of accounts is needed. This is one of the most common reasons dormant filings go wrong, so it is sensible to review the bank statements and any records for the period before deciding how to prepare and file.
