I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares for Companies House when it has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the financial period — broadly, where there have been no significant accounting transactions. They are usually much shorter and simpler than the accounts of a trading company, reflecting the fact that little or nothing has happened financially. The exact content and format depend on the company's circumstances and the Companies House rules that apply at the time, which is why it is worth confirming your position before you prepare anything.
For Companies House purposes, a company is generally treated as dormant when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the period covered by the accounts. It is not simply a matter of the director deciding the company is inactive — the test looks at what actually happened in the accounts. Transactions such as bank charges, interest received or certain statutory payments can affect whether the dormant route is appropriate, and there are specific rules and exceptions that can apply. If your company has had any activity, it is sensible to check whether it still qualifies before you file.
In most cases, yes. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes will generally still need to file annual accounts for each financial year, along with a confirmation statement, unless it has been formally dissolved or a specific rule applies to its situation. Dormancy reduces the complexity of what is filed — it does not usually remove the filing obligation itself. Missing annual accounts can lead to problems for the company and its directors, so keeping an eye on the accounts due date matters even when the company is not trading.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and it is generally still required while the company remains registered — even if it is dormant. It confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company, such as the registered office address, directors and shareholders, is up to date. Because the confirmation statement and the annual accounts are different filings with different deadlines, it is easy to assume that completing one covers the other. It does not, so both usually need to be kept in order.
Yes. Dormant company accounts are prepared on the basis that the company has had no significant accounting transactions, so they are typically far shorter than the accounts of a company that has been trading. A trading company's accounts include details of income, expenditure, assets and liabilities in line with the applicable accounting and filing requirements, which simply are not relevant in the same way for a dormant company. Because a dormant company may have different accounting requirements from an active trading company, the form and filing route used are not necessarily the same for every dormant company — it depends on the company's circumstances and the rules that apply.
No, and this trips up a lot of directors. Companies House dormancy and HMRC Corporation Tax dormancy are separate concepts with separate tests, and a company can be dormant for one purpose but not automatically for the other. Filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not notify HMRC that your company is dormant, and it does not by itself change your Corporation Tax position or stop any Corporation Tax obligations you may have. If you want to be treated as dormant for Corporation Tax purposes, that generally needs to be dealt with separately with HMRC.
It depends on your company's circumstances and on what HMRC has asked for. Corporation Tax Returns are separate HMRC obligations from Companies House filings, and they are not covered by filing dormant company accounts. A company that believes it is dormant for Corporation Tax purposes may still receive a notice to file, and HMRC's requirements are not automatically switched off by Companies House dormancy. This is an area where the right answer really does depend on your own position, so it is worth confirming with HMRC or a professional rather than assuming.
As a starting point, we usually need details of the company itself, the financial period being reported, and confirmation of the company's activity — or lack of it — during that period. Information about the directors, the registered office, share capital and any transactions that did take place helps establish whether the dormant accounts route is appropriate and what needs to be included. If there have been any bank transactions, charges or payments, mention them, as they can affect whether the company qualifies as dormant for Companies House purposes. The more clearly your circumstances are set out, the smoother the preparation and filing process tends to be.
