I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares when it has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the accounting period in question. They typically reflect a company with no significant accounting transactions, so the figures involved are minimal rather than showing trading income and costs. They are still formal accounts prepared for a specific accounting period and filed with Companies House where the company is required to file. The exact content and the route used to file them depend on the company's circumstances and the rules that apply at the time.
For Companies House purposes, a company is generally treated as dormant when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the period. That is not the same as simply having no sales — money moving through the company, or certain other transactions, may take it outside dormancy for that period. Because the test looks at your underlying records rather than your intentions, the safest approach is to review the period's transactions and confirm your position before preparing dormant accounts. If your company has been active at any point in the period, a different type of accounts preparation is likely to be needed.
In most cases, yes. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes generally still has annual filing obligations, including filing accounts and a confirmation statement, unless it has been formally dissolved or another specific rule applies to it. Dormancy is not the same as being exempt from filing, and assuming otherwise is one of the most common mistakes directors make with an inactive company. The confirmation statement is a separate filing from the accounts: it confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company is correct, whereas the accounts deal with the company's financial position for the period.
No — they are two separate concepts with different tests and different authorities. A company can be dormant for Companies House purposes but not for Corporation Tax, or the other way around. Filing dormant company accounts with Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC that your company is dormant, and it does not automatically end any Corporation Tax obligations the company may have. If you want to establish your position with HMRC, that is a separate exercise, and you may want to take advice on it alongside your annual accounts.
Yes, in practice they are considerably simpler. Trading company accounts report income, expenses, assets and liabilities in detail, with the disclosures and formats that apply to an active business. Dormant company accounts generally reflect a company with no significant accounting transactions during the period, so there is far less to report. That said, dormant companies can have different accounting requirements from active trading companies, and not every dormant company can use the same form or filing route, so the correct approach depends on your circumstances. Getting this right from the start avoids a filing that does not match your company's actual position.
We usually start with the company's basic details, the accounting period in question, and a clear picture of what happened — or did not happen — during that period. Bank statements and transaction records are particularly helpful because they show whether any activity took place that would affect dormancy. Details of the company's officers, registered office and share structure help too, along with any previous accounts or filings so the next set is consistent. If anything is missing, we will let you know what else is needed before the accounts are prepared.
It can, and this is exactly why the dormancy test deserves proper attention rather than a quick assumption. Some transactions may be disregarded when assessing whether a company is dormant for a period, while others may mean it does not qualify as dormant for that period. Bank charges, interest, or payments in and out of the account are worth reviewing carefully against the applicable rules. If your company has had transactions of this kind, it is worth checking the position before dormant accounts are prepared, as the correct treatment depends on the specific circumstances.
Yes. Many directors of inactive companies ask an accountant to prepare dormant company accounts and handle the Companies House filing, precisely because the rules around dormancy, the relevant accounting period and the separate confirmation statement can be easy to misread. An accountant can also help you keep the company's records and statutory information in order, and flag when something in the period suggests a different type of accounts is required. Where Corporation Tax or other HMRC matters arise, those are separate from the Companies House filing and should be considered on their own terms.
