I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a limited company prepares and files with Companies House when it has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the relevant accounting period. They are a simplified set of accounts that reflect a period with no significant accounting transactions, rather than the fuller accounts a trading company would normally produce. The exact content and the filing route depend on the company's circumstances and the Companies House rules in force at the time, so the first job is usually to confirm whether the company genuinely qualifies as dormant for that period. Dormant accounts are a Companies House filing; they are not the same thing as a confirmation statement, a Corporation Tax Return, a VAT Return, or a payroll submission.
Broadly speaking, a company is treated as dormant for Companies House purposes when it has no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period. A lack of trading on its own is not automatically enough, and the fact that a company has not invoiced anyone or has not been active on social media does not decide the matter either. Certain transactions are usually disregarded when assessing dormancy, while others may mean the company is not dormant for that period. Because the answer depends on what actually happened in the company's records, it is worth reviewing the period carefully, or having someone review it for you, before deciding which type of accounts is appropriate.
Yes, in most cases. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes will generally still have to file annual accounts for each accounting period, along with a confirmation statement. Dormant status is not an exemption from all filing obligations. The only situations where this falls away are where the company has been formally dissolved or where a specific rule applies to that company's particular circumstances. Missing a filing because the company was assumed to be inactive is a common and avoidable problem, so it is sensible to diarise the annual requirements even when there is nothing of substance to report.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and a dormant company will normally still need to file one. The confirmation statement confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company, such as its registered office, directors, and shareholders, is correct as at the confirmation date. It is not an accounts filing and it does not report profits or transactions. Because the two obligations fall at different points and serve different purposes, they should be treated as separate tasks in the company's annual calendar rather than as one combined requirement.
No, they are separate concepts with separate rules. Dormancy for Companies House purposes is about whether the company has had significant accounting transactions in the period. Dormancy for Corporation Tax purposes is a matter for HMRC and is assessed against HMRC's own criteria. A company can be dormant for one purpose and not the other, so it should not be assumed that the two always line up. Filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not automatically tell HMRC that the company is dormant, and it does not by itself change the company's Corporation Tax position. If you are unsure where your company stands, it is worth checking both angles rather than relying on one.
That depends on the company's position with HMRC, not on its Companies House dormancy. A Corporation Tax Return, usually referred to as a CT600, is a separate HMRC obligation and applies where HMRC requires one for the period in question. A company that has notified HMRC of dormancy may not need to complete a return for a dormant period, but that is a matter for HMRC's records and their own notification process. Filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not satisfy a Corporation Tax obligation and does not automatically notify HMRC of anything, so the two should always be considered separately.
Typically we need details of the company itself, including its name, company number, registered office, and the accounting period in question. We also need to understand what, if anything, happened in that period, so bank statements and a brief note of any transactions are useful, even where you believe there were none. Details of the directors, the share capital position, and any changes during the period help make sure the accounts reflect the company accurately. If you have previously filed accounts or received correspondence from Companies House, sharing that helps us check the filing history is consistent before we prepare anything.
It can, and this is one of the reasons dormancy should never be assumed. Certain transactions are usually disregarded when assessing whether a company is dormant for Companies House purposes, while others may take the company outside the dormant definition for that period. A single payment, a bank charge, or an unexpected entry can change which set of accounts is appropriate, so it is better to look at the actual records than to rely on memory. If something has gone through the account, tell us about it and we will help you work out how it affects the company's position for that period.
