I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares and files with Companies House for an accounting period in which it was dormant for Companies House purposes, normally meaning it had no significant accounting transactions in that period. They are usually shorter and simpler than the accounts of a trading company, but they still have to be prepared in the correct format and submitted within the company's filing requirements. Dormant company accounts are not a substitute for a Corporation Tax Return or a confirmation statement, and they do not tell HMRC anything about your tax position on their own.
A company is generally treated as dormant for Companies House purposes when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period. Certain transactions do not necessarily break dormancy, while others, such as bank charges, interest received or payments made, can mean the company is not dormant for that period and needs to file a different type of accounts instead. Because the detail matters, it is worth reviewing the company's activity and bank statements before deciding which route applies. The test is applied period by period, so a company can be dormant for one set of accounts and not for the next.
Yes, in most cases a company that is dormant for Companies House purposes still has annual filing obligations, including filing accounts for the relevant period, unless it has been formally dissolved or a specific rule applies to it. Being dormant is not an exemption from filing altogether. What changes is the type of accounts the company is expected to prepare and file, which depends on its circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules. Missing or delaying a filing does not make the obligation disappear, so it is sensible to keep an eye on the company's accounting reference date and the filing that follows it.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and a dormant company will typically still need to file one. It confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company, such as its registered office, directors, shareholders and share capital, is up to date. It is filed alongside, not instead of, the annual accounts. Keeping both up to date is part of managing a dormant company properly, and any changes to the company's details should be reported to Companies House as well.
No, these are two separate concepts with different rules and different purposes. Companies House dormancy relates to the company's accounting transactions and the annual accounts it files, while HMRC dormancy relates to whether the company has Corporation Tax obligations to report. A company can be dormant for one and not the other, and it is possible for it to have no Corporation Tax to pay while still needing to file dormant company accounts, or the reverse. Filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC of anything or change the company's Corporation Tax status, so the two positions should always be considered separately.
Not always, but it depends on the company's circumstances rather than on its Companies House status alone. Some dormant companies still need to file a Corporation Tax Return, while others may be able to tell HMRC they are dormant and have different requirements. Whether a return is needed can depend on matters such as any income received, previous trading activity or an outstanding request from HMRC. Because the position varies, it is best to confirm it directly with HMRC or with an accountant rather than assuming that dormant company accounts filing covers the tax side as well.
We usually need the company name and registration number, the accounting reference date for the period in question, details of the directors and registered office, and confirmation of whether any transactions took place during the period, including bank interest, charges or payments. Having the accounting period in mind helps too, particularly if this is the company's first set of accounts or if the accounting reference date has been changed. If anything is unclear, we will ask the questions needed to establish which set of accounts and which filing route fits the company.
It can, but this affects whether the company qualifies as dormant for Companies House purposes for that period. Small items such as bank charges, interest credited or a payment being made can be enough to take a company outside the dormancy definition for that accounting period, which means dormant company accounts may not be the correct filing and a different form of accounts would be needed. There is no single answer that covers every company, because it depends on what the transactions were and how the rules apply to them. Reviewing the bank activity for the period before preparing anything is the most reliable way to avoid filing the wrong type of accounts.
