I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts prepared for a company that has been dormant for Companies House purposes during its financial period. They typically report a very limited position — often no profit and loss activity, with the balance sheet reflecting the company's basic share capital and any amounts owed to or by the company — and they are filed at Companies House in place of full trading accounts. Not every dormant company uses the same form or filing route, so the correct approach depends on the company's circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules at the time.
For Companies House purposes, a company is generally treated as dormant when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the period covered by the accounts. A significant accounting transaction is normally one that would need to be recorded in the company's accounting records, so small administrative entries do not automatically take a company outside dormancy. The wording and thresholds involved are specific, and the rules can change, so it is sensible to check your company's actual activity against the current definition rather than relying on a general impression that the company is inactive.
Yes, in most cases. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes will generally still need to file annual accounts each year, and it will also normally need to file a confirmation statement. These are two separate filings with two separate purposes: the accounts report on the company's financial position for the period, while the confirmation statement confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company — such as its officers, registered office, share capital and people with significant control — is still accurate. The only routine exceptions are where the company has been formally dissolved or where a specific rule applies to that company.
No, and this is one of the most common areas of confusion. Companies House dormancy and HMRC Corporation Tax dormancy are assessed separately and against different tests. A company can be dormant for Companies House purposes but not for Corporation Tax, and the reverse can also apply. Filing dormant company accounts at Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC that your company is dormant, and it does not switch off any Corporation Tax obligations on its own. If you want to change your company's status with HMRC, that is a separate process.
That depends on the company's position with HMRC, not on its dormant status at Companies House. A Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is an HMRC obligation, and whether one is required — or whether HMRC has confirmed that a return is not needed for a particular period — depends on the company's circumstances and any correspondence from HMRC. Some dormant companies are asked to file a return, others are not. Because the two regimes operate independently, it is worth checking your HMRC position separately from your dormant company accounts filing rather than assuming one settles the other.
It can, but the nature of those transactions matters. Small entries such as bank charges, or amounts paid by a director on the company's behalf, are common in an otherwise inactive company and may still leave it dormant for Companies House purposes. However, some transactions can take a company outside dormancy for the period, which would mean full accounts are needed instead. Where bank charges or similar items appear, the safest approach is to look at what each entry actually represents before deciding which type of accounts to prepare.
Typically we would look for your company name and number, the accounting reference date for the period, your company's registered details, and confirmation of what activity — if any — took place during the year, including any bank transactions, expenses or amounts owed to or from directors. Share capital details and any changes to officers or shareholders are also useful, particularly if a confirmation statement is being prepared at the same time. If your circumstances are unusual, or if there is any doubt about dormancy, we will ask for the additional detail needed to get the position right.
Filing after the due date can lead to penalties, and the longer the delay, the more significant those penalties can become, with the exact outcome depending on the company's circumstances and Companies House rules. Late accounts also leave a visible mark on the company's filing history, which can affect how the company looks to banks, buyers or future investors, and repeated lateness can lead to further action against the company. If you think a filing has already been missed, it is worth addressing it promptly rather than waiting for the next year's deadline to come around.
