I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts filed with Companies House for a company that has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the accounting period. In practice, they record a period in which the company had no significant accounting transactions, so there is usually no trading profit and loss activity to report and the balance sheet tends to reflect a simple position such as share capital and any amounts owed between the company and its directors or shareholders. The exact content depends on the company's circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, which is why it is worth checking your position rather than copying a template from a similar company.
A company is generally treated as dormant for Companies House purposes when it has had no significant accounting transactions during the financial year. That means no sales, no purchases, no ongoing running costs and no other entries that would change the company's financial position, subject to how certain items are treated under the applicable rules. A company that has simply paused trading, or that has a bank account with activity running through it, may not meet the dormant definition. Because the test turns on what actually happened in the books during the period, the starting point is always a review of the company's records for that year.
Yes, in most cases. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes generally still has to file annual accounts for each accounting period, even where those accounts are prepared on a dormant basis. The obligation normally continues until the company is formally dissolved, or unless a specific rule applies to that company's situation. Being dormant is not the same as being exempt from filing, and leaving accounts unfiled because the company is not trading is a common and avoidable problem for directors.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and a dormant company will usually still need to file one. The confirmation statement confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company — such as the registered office address, directors, shareholders and statement of capital — is correct as at the confirmation date. It is not a set of accounts and it does not replace the annual accounts. Many dormant company directors handle both filings together each year so that nothing is missed.
They are different in scope rather than in principle. Full accounts for a trading company include a profit and loss account, notes on turnover and expenses, and often more detailed disclosures, whereas dormant accounts reflect a period with no significant accounting transactions and are usually much shorter. A dormant company may also have different accounting requirements from an active trading company, and the filing route available can depend on the company's size, history and circumstances. Not every dormant company can use the same form or route, so it is worth confirming which approach applies before filing.
No — these are two separate concepts with different rules and different bodies. A company can be dormant for Companies House purposes but not for Corporation Tax, or the other way round, and a change in one position does not automatically change the other. Filing dormant accounts with Companies House does not notify HMRC of anything, and it does not by itself stop a company having Corporation Tax obligations. If you are unsure how your company is regarded for tax purposes, that question is best dealt with separately from the Companies House filing.
A Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is an HMRC obligation, separate from the annual accounts filed at Companies House. Whether a return is required depends on the company's tax position and HMRC's view of its dormancy, and being dormant at Companies House does not settle that question either way. Some dormant companies are not asked to deliver a return, while others still need to notify HMRC or file for certain periods. It is worth checking your company's HMRC position directly rather than assuming the Companies House position covers it.
Yes, in many cases dormant accounts still need to be filed for any accounting period that falls before the company is formally dissolved. Closing a company — whether through voluntary strike-off or another route — does not retrospectively remove filing obligations for earlier periods, and outstanding accounts can hold up the process. If your company is being wound up or struck off, it is sensible to review which periods still require accounts and which filings are outstanding so that the closure is not delayed by an administrative gap. The exact position depends on the company's dates and circumstances.
