I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts a company prepares and files with Companies House when it has been dormant for Companies House purposes during the relevant financial period. In broad terms, that means the company had no significant accounting transactions in the period. The accounts are usually much shorter than those of a trading company, often consisting of a simple balance sheet, and they may be supported by notes or a directors' report depending on the company's circumstances and the rules that apply to it. It is worth being clear that dormant company accounts are not the same thing as a confirmation statement, a Corporation Tax Return (CT600) or a VAT Return — those are separate filings with separate purposes.
For Companies House purposes, a company is generally treated as dormant if it has had no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period. Some transactions are typically disregarded, such as payments to the registrar for filing fees and the taking of shares by the subscribers to the memorandum. Whether any other transaction affects the position depends on the facts and the applicable rules, which is why it pays to look at the actual activity in the period rather than assuming. A company that has received income, paid suppliers or incurred bank charges will usually need to look more closely at whether a dormant position genuinely applies.
In most cases, yes. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes still has to file annual accounts for each accounting period unless it has been formally dissolved or a specific rule applies to it. Dormancy is not an exemption from company filing requirements. Dormant Company Accounts Filing is normally how that annual accounts obligation is met, and the exact accounts and filing route depend on the company's circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules — not every dormant company is in the same position, and not every company can use the same form or route.
Yes, in most cases. A confirmation statement is a completely separate Companies House filing from the annual accounts, and a dormant company that remains registered will usually need to file one at least once every 12 months, even where there has been no trading activity at all. The confirmation statement is where you confirm or update details such as the registered office address, directors, shareholders and share capital. Filing dormant accounts does not satisfy the confirmation statement requirement, and filing a confirmation statement does not satisfy the accounts requirement — they are two distinct obligations.
They are usually simpler. A company that qualifies as dormant may be able to prepare a very short balance sheet rather than full statutory accounts with a profit and loss account, detailed notes and a directors' report of the kind a trading company would prepare. That said, it is a mistake to assume every dormant company can use the same form or the same filing route. The requirements depend on the company's specific circumstances and on the Companies House rules that apply to it, so the right approach needs to be confirmed for your company rather than copied from someone else's.
No — they are separate concepts, assessed for different purposes. A company can be dormant for Companies House purposes but not for HMRC, or the other way around. Letting Companies House know your company is dormant does not automatically tell HMRC anything, and it does not automatically stop Corporation Tax obligations from arising. If you believe your company may also be dormant for Corporation Tax purposes, that needs to be considered separately as an HMRC matter, and it is worth taking advice before assuming your position.
It may do. Whether a Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is required is an HMRC question and depends on the company's circumstances — including whether HMRC has issued a notice requiring a return. Dormant Company Accounts Filing deals with your Companies House accounts obligation only; it does not file anything with HMRC and does not automatically notify HMRC of dormancy. If you are not sure whether a return is due, look at your company's HMRC correspondence and take advice on your Corporation Tax position separately from your Companies House filing.
Companies House can issue penalties for accounts filed after the deadline, and the amount generally increases the later the filing becomes, with repeat lateness potentially leading to higher penalties. It is worth checking your company's accounting reference date and confirming the deadline that applies to your period rather than assuming dormant status buys extra time. If filings have slipped, the practical step is usually to bring them up to date as quickly as possible and then put a simple reminder system in place so the next one does not creep up unannounced.
