I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Dormant company accounts are the annual accounts prepared for a company that is dormant for Companies House purposes. They are usually a shorter, simpler set of accounts than a trading company would file, and they are filed at Companies House as part of the company's annual accounts requirement. The exact content and format depend on your company's circumstances and on the applicable Companies House rules, which is why it is worth checking your position rather than copying a template. They are not the same thing as a confirmation statement, a Corporation Tax Return or a VAT Return.
Broadly, a company is treated as dormant for Companies House purposes where it has had no significant accounting transactions during the accounting period in question. Some transactions are normally disregarded, while others can take a company outside dormancy for that period. The test is applied period by period, so a company might qualify in one year and not the next. It is also not something you can simply decide for yourself: the underlying activity and records need to support the position. If you are unsure how your company's transactions are treated, we can review them with you before anything is prepared or filed.
In most cases, yes. A company that is dormant for Companies House purposes generally still has annual filing obligations, and that includes filing annual accounts with Companies House unless the company has been formally dissolved or another specific rule applies. Being dormant is not an exemption from filing altogether. The type of accounts required can differ from those of an actively trading company, and the appropriate route depends on your company's circumstances. Keeping on top of the annual accounts deadline is one of the main reasons dormant company directors ask for help, because it is easy to overlook when there is no trading activity to prompt you.
A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from dormant company accounts, and a dormant company generally still needs to file one. It confirms that the information Companies House holds about the company, such as the registered office address, directors, shareholders and share capital, is correct as at the confirmation date. Filing dormant company accounts does not replace the confirmation statement, and filing a confirmation statement does not replace the annual accounts. Both can fall due in the same year, so it helps to track them together. We can support you with the confirmation statement as part of your wider dormant company filing routine.
No, they are separate concepts. Dormancy for Companies House is about whether the company meets the criteria for dormant company accounts and the related annual accounts filing route. Dormancy for Corporation Tax is an HMRC matter, with its own conditions and its own process, and it is not automatically granted just because a company has stopped trading or has filed dormant accounts with Companies House. A company can be dormant for one purpose and not for the other. Filing dormant accounts at Companies House does not, on its own, notify HMRC that your company is dormant, so the two positions need to be considered separately.
Corporation Tax Returns are an HMRC obligation, separate from your Companies House filings. Whether a return is required depends on your company's circumstances and on HMRC's view of its position, and being dormant at Companies House does not automatically remove Corporation Tax obligations or deal with them on your behalf. If HMRC has issued a notice to deliver a return, that notice generally needs to be dealt with. Because the rules and the routes for telling HMRC about a dormant or non-trading period are not the same as the Companies House process, it is worth checking your Corporation Tax position alongside your dormant company accounts rather than assuming one covers the other.
It depends on the transaction and on the applicable rules. Some transactions are normally disregarded when assessing dormancy for Companies House purposes, while others can mean the company is not dormant for that period. Bank charges, interest, or payments made from the company account are common examples that directors ask about, and the treatment is not always obvious. Rather than guessing, send us the details and the relevant bank statements, and we will look at what has actually gone through the company during the period and explain whether the dormant accounts route is available or whether a different type of accounts is needed.
For a straightforward dormant company, we usually need your company name and number, the accounting period we are dealing with, details of the directors and registered office as held at Companies House, and confirmation of what activity, if any, took place during the period. Bank statements for the period are helpful even if the account was unused, along with details of any transactions that did occur, such as charges, interest or payments. If your company has more complex history, such as previous trading, changes in share capital or an earlier filing, we may ask for more. Once we have the information, we can confirm the filing route that fits your circumstances and get your dormant company filing organised.
