FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Maybole

FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts in Maybole are prepared under the financial reporting framework that applies when a qualifying company chooses to use the UK micro-entities regime. FRS 105 is the smallest and simplest of the UK accounting standards, designed for companies that meet the micro-entity size conditions and decide that this regime suits their circumstances. It is, however, a choice rather than an automatic entitlement: eligibility depends on the relevant size criteria and on a range of other rules and exclusions, so the position should always be checked for the specific company and accounting period. Professional preparation helps to make sure the accounts are built up properly from your financial records, presented in the format FRS 105 expects, and consistent with the information you report elsewhere. If you run a small limited company in Maybole or across South Ayrshire and want to understand whether FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts are the right fit, we can review your position and explain the options in plain English.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── FRS 105 EXPLAINED

FRS 105 Explained: The Micro-Entities Regime in Simple Terms

FRS 105 is a UK financial reporting standard written specifically for micro-entities. In practice, it is the accounting framework that sits behind FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts: it sets out how the financial statements should be put together, what they should include, and how the figures should be measured. The link to the micro-entities regime is straightforward — the regime is a set of rules in UK company law that gives smaller companies the option to report in a simplified way, and FRS 105 is the standard that applies when that option is chosen. So a company does not simply “get” FRS 105; it qualifies under the micro-entity conditions and then decides whether to apply the regime. Where it does, the accounts tend to be shorter and more streamlined than those prepared under a larger framework such as FRS 102, with simpler disclosures and fewer notes. For a director in Maybole running a small trading or service company, that can mean accounts that are easier to read and less costly to prepare, while still giving a fair picture of the business. It is worth remembering that FRS 105 accounts deal with financial reporting only — they are not the same thing as a Corporation Tax Return, and they do not replace your other filing obligations.

Who Can Use FRS 105 in the UK?

FRS 105 is intended for companies that qualify for the UK micro-entities regime and choose to apply it — the two parts matter equally. A company first has to fall within the micro-entity size conditions and not be caught by any of the exclusions that apply to the regime, and then it has to decide that this is the framework it wants to use. For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of the 3 applicable conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Those figures give a useful starting point, but they are not the whole picture. Other eligibility rules and exclusions can apply, some types of company and some group or regulated situations are treated differently, and the tests are measured over the relevant period. That means meeting the size thresholds alone does not guarantee that a company can use FRS 105, and a company that could use it is never obliged to. If you are a director in Maybole weighing up FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts against a fuller framework, it is worth having your specific position checked before committing to an approach.

─── What We Review

Everything Your Micro-Entity Company Is Required to Get Right

Most compliance problems are not deliberate. They come from a missed deadline, an accounts template that no longer matches FRS 105, or dividends taken without the paperwork to support them. Our review covers each area in turn and reports back in plain English.

Professionally Prepared FRS 105 Accounts and Accurate Financial Reporting

Preparing FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts well starts with good records. We work from your bookkeeping, bank information, invoices, receipts, payroll details, asset purchases and any loan or director’s account movements to build a set of financial statements that reflects what actually happened in the business during the period. Those figures are then arranged in the presentation that FRS 105 requires, with the balance sheet, the notes and the accompanying statements put together in line with the applicable reporting requirements for a micro-entity. It is important to keep the different obligations separate: the preparation of FRS 105 financial statements is an accounting and reporting exercise, while filing those accounts with Companies House is a company law requirement with its own deadlines and format, and a Corporation Tax Return (CT600) is a separate submission to HMRC dealing with tax. They all draw on the same underlying numbers, but they are not the same document and they are not submitted to the same place. Our role is to prepare the accounts carefully and accurately on the basis of the information provided, to explain the judgements involved, and to help you understand what is being filed and why. We do not claim that any authority approves, endorses or reviews the accounts, and nothing here should be read as a guarantee of a particular outcome.

FRS 105 is the UK financial reporting standard for micro-entities. It sets out how a qualifying micro-entity should prepare its financial statements when it chooses to apply the micro-entities regime, including the format of the accounts, the measurement of the figures and the limited disclosures required. It is deliberately simpler than the standards used by larger companies, which is why it is popular with very small limited companies.

FRS 105 is available to companies that qualify for the micro-entities regime and decide to apply it. Qualification depends on meeting the micro-entity size conditions and on not being excluded by other rules — for example, certain types of company and certain regulated or group situations are not eligible. Meeting the size tests on their own does not automatically guarantee eligibility, so the specific facts of your company and accounting period should be checked.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company generally needs to meet at least 2 of the 3 applicable size conditions: turnover of no more than £1 million, a balance sheet total of no more than £500,000, and an average of no more than 10 employees. Additional rules and exclusions apply, and the criteria are assessed by reference to the relevant period, so it is worth confirming your position before assuming you qualify.

No. The micro-entities regime is an option, not an obligation. A company that qualifies can choose to apply it and use FRS 105, or it can prepare its accounts under a different framework such as FRS 102. Many small companies choose FRS 105 because the reporting is simpler, but there can be reasons to prefer a fuller framework, and the decision should be made with your circumstances in mind.

Both are UK financial reporting standards, but they sit at different levels. FRS 105 is for micro-entities and is the most streamlined option, with simpler measurement rules and fewer disclosures. FRS 102 is the standard used by small and larger entities and generally requires more detail, more notes and, in places, more judgement. The framework you use affects how the accounts look and what information has to be disclosed, so it is more than a labelling exercise.

Yes. Where a company prepares FRS 105 Micro Entity Accounts and is required to file accounts, those accounts are submitted to Companies House under the company law filing rules. Filing the accounts is a separate obligation from preparing them, and it is also separate from tax. Companies House deals with the public filing of accounts and other company information; it does not assess your tax position.

Yes, they are two different things. FRS 105 accounts are financial statements prepared under the micro-entities reporting framework. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC. The accounts usually provide the starting point for the tax figures, but the return is a separate document, goes to a different authority, and follows tax rules rather than accounting presentation rules. A Confirmation Statement is separate again.

Typically we need your bookkeeping or accounting records for the period, bank and credit card statements, sales and purchase records, payroll information, details of any assets bought or sold, loan and director's account movements, and stock or work-in-progress figures where relevant. Opening balances and the previous year's accounts are also useful. Having these ready helps the accounts to be prepared efficiently and reduces the number of queries raised along the way.

A newly incorporated company may well be able to use FRS 105 for its first set of accounts if it qualifies as a micro-entity and chooses the regime. Because first-period accounts can cover a longer or shorter span than 12 months, and because average employee numbers and turnover are measured over the period, eligibility should be looked at on the actual facts rather than assumed. We can review this with you once your first period is under way.

The UK is moving towards filing accounts in a digital, structured format, and the detail required for small and micro-entity accounts is expected to increase over time. Exact requirements and dates depend on government implementation, so it is sensible to keep your records organised and software-friendly now. If you prepare your accounts with us, we will keep the way they are put together under review so that filing stays as straightforward as possible.
