First Year Accounts for Limited Company in West Molesey, Prepared and Filed With Professional Support

The end of a company’s first accounting period often raises more questions than a routine year-end: which figures belong in the accounts, how the first period should be treated, and what actually has to be sent to Companies House. Micro Entity Accounts works with newly incorporated and newly trading limited companies in West Molesey to prepare that first set of statutory accounts properly and file them with Companies House where required, so directors understand exactly what has been submitted in their company’s name. We begin by reviewing the accounting records you hold — bank transactions, sales and income records, purchase invoices, business expenses, asset purchases, director loan movements and share capital details where relevant — and then prepare a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account under the reporting framework that suits your company. Statutory accounts filing is a separate exercise from Corporation Tax: a limited company may also have Corporation Tax obligations, including a CT600 return to HMRC, and those filings serve different purposes and go to different destinations. Our role is to prepare, review and file the accounts correctly, while making the wider compliance position clear so nothing material is overlooked.

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Incorporation

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company, and How Do They Apply to New Limited Companies in West Molesey?

First year accounts are the first set of statutory annual accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period. Every UK limited company has a statutory duty to keep adequate accounting records and to prepare accounts for each financial year, and that duty begins with the first period — it is not something that can be set aside simply because the company is newly incorporated. The start and end of that period depend on the company’s incorporation date and its accounting reference date, which is why first accounting periods are not all the same length and why first filing deadlines can differ from company to company. Acting early is usually simpler than leaving it until a reminder arrives. Once the first accounting period is confirmed, the accounts are built from the company’s underlying records. A balance sheet is always needed, showing what the company owns and owes at the period end, and a profit and loss account is prepared where the applicable framework requires one. Directors’ responsibilities, the share capital position and any transactions with directors also need to be reflected accurately. Where a company has had very little activity, its reporting position depends on its own circumstances and the applicable rules rather than being automatically treated as dormant, so it is worth confirming the correct treatment rather than assuming. Some companies that meet the eligibility conditions for the micro-entity framework can prepare and file simplified accounts, often under FRS 105, the financial reporting standard applicable to qualifying entities using the micro-entity regime. That is not automatic. A newly incorporated company is not a micro-entity by default, a low turnover figure alone does not settle the question, and FRS 105 does not apply to every company. Other companies may fall within the small company framework or need to prepare accounts on a fuller basis. Eligibility depends on the company’s circumstances and the requirements for the relevant accounting period. It also helps to keep the different compliance tasks separate. First year statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return such as a CT600 is submitted to HMRC, and the two are not interchangeable — filing accounts does not submit a tax return, and submitting a tax return does not complete the Companies House filing. The company’s first Corporation Tax accounting period and its statutory accounts period may not be identical. A confirmation statement is another separate filing that keeps Companies House register information up to date and does not replace the accounts, and VAT returns, payroll submissions or other obligations may also apply depending on how the business operates. Throughout all of this, the directors remain responsible for ensuring the company meets its statutory obligations, even when an accountant is engaged. Professional support assists with preparing, reviewing and filing the required information rather than transferring that responsibility away.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

Business Turnover

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

Balance Sheet

Balance sheet total of £500,000 or less.(£316,000 previously)

Company Size

On an average 10 or less employees

Get Your First Year Accounts for Limited Company in West Molesey Prepared Correctly

Many directors incorporate a company, start trading and only then discover that the first set of accounts works differently from later years. The first accounting period may run for more or less than twelve months, the accounting reference date may not be the one originally expected, and the figures have to be presented under a reporting framework the company is actually eligible to use. If you are unsure what needs to go to Companies House, what your accounting records should be showing, or whether micro-entity accounts are the right route for your company, Micro Entity Accounts can take the preparation and filing off your desk. We work through your records with you, prepare the statutory accounts for the first period and handle the Companies House filing where required, while keeping the separate Corporation Tax position clearly in view. Bringing in professional help before your first year-end arrives means the accounts are built from accurate records and the company’s compliance obligations are dealt with in the right order.

They are the first set of statutory annual accounts a company prepares for its initial accounting period, covering the period from incorporation or the start of trading through to its first accounting reference date. They are usually made up of a balance sheet and, where the applicable framework requires it, a profit and loss account, together with any notes the framework calls for. Once prepared and approved by the directors, they are delivered to Companies House where required. They are not the same as a tax return or a confirmation statement, and filing them does not complete those separate obligations.

The first filing date depends on the company's incorporation date, its accounting reference date and the requirements that apply to first accounts. The first accounting period is often longer than twelve months because it runs from incorporation to the first accounting reference date, but that is not always the case, and a company can apply to change its accounting reference date in certain circumstances. Because the deadline is measured from the company's own accounting reference date rather than from the date you start trading, it is worth checking the specific dates attached to your company rather than relying on a general rule.

It depends on what the company has actually done during the period. Typically we would look at bank statements and transactions, sales and income records, purchase invoices and expense receipts, asset purchases, the share capital details created at incorporation, any money introduced or withdrawn by directors, loans or finance agreements, and records of anything owed to or by the company at the period end. Payroll records and VAT records are also relevant where those registrations apply. If some records are incomplete, we can help identify what is missing before the accounts are prepared.

Yes — preparing and filing statutory accounts is a general requirement for UK limited companies, and it is not optional simply because the company is new or has been quiet. Where a company has had no significant accounting transactions, its reporting position depends on its circumstances and the applicable rules rather than being automatically described as dormant, and directors may still have obligations to meet. We regularly help directors in West Molesey work out which position applies to their company and what needs to be filed as a result.

No. Statutory accounts go to Companies House where required, while a Corporation Tax Return such as a CT600 is submitted to HMRC and is a separate filing with a separate purpose. The figures in the accounts often feed into the tax computation, but completing one does not complete the other, and neither filing is a substitute for the other. It is also worth noting that a company's first Corporation Tax accounting period and its statutory accounts period may not necessarily be identical, so the two should be considered together rather than assumed to match.

It may, but only if it meets the eligibility requirements that apply for the relevant accounting period. Micro-entity status is not granted automatically to new companies, and a low turnover figure on its own does not settle the question. FRS 105 is the financial reporting standard applicable to qualifying entities using the micro-entity framework, and where a company does not qualify, the small company framework or full accounts may be the appropriate route instead. Checking eligibility before the accounts are prepared avoids reworking them later.

No — they are separate filings with different purposes. The accounts report the company's financial position for the period, while a confirmation statement confirms that the information held on the public register, such as directors, shareholders and registered office details, remains accurate. A company may still need to submit confirmation statements during and after its first accounting period, and keeping Companies House information up to date sits alongside the accounts filing rather than being covered by it.

Failing to deliver accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to Companies House consequences, and the outcome can vary depending on how late the filing is and the company's filing history. Paying any penalty does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts. If an appeal against a penalty is being considered, eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable rules. Where accounts are already overdue, the practical step is usually to get the records in order and file as soon as possible, and we can assist companies in West Molesey with that process.
