First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Tiverton: Professional Preparation and Filing Support

A newly incorporated company still has statutory accounts to deal with, and the first set is usually the one directors find least familiar. First Year Accounts for Limited Company work in Tiverton involves preparing the statutory accounts for the company’s opening accounting period, reviewing the accounting records behind the figures, and supporting the delivery of those accounts to Companies House where required. We help directors who have recently incorporated — whether the company is already trading, has only just started, or has had limited activity — to understand what needs to be reported and which reporting framework fits their circumstances. Where Corporation Tax applies, we make the separation clear: a CT600 and any related returns go to HMRC, while statutory accounts go to Companies House, and filing one does not complete the other.

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company, and Could Your Tiverton Company Qualify?

First year accounts are the first set of annual statutory accounts a limited company prepares after incorporation. They cover the company’s initial accounting period, which generally begins on the date of incorporation and ends on the company’s first accounting reference date. That period is not identical for every company: it depends on the incorporation date, the accounting reference date set at Companies House, and whether the accounting reference date has since been changed. In some cases the opening period is longer than a standard twelve-month period, which is one reason why first-year filing requirements are often different from the pattern a director later becomes used to. Once prepared, those statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required. Companies House receives and registers the filing; it does not prepare the accounts, assess whether they were professionally prepared, or approve them. The content of the accounts depends on the reporting framework that applies. A company may qualify to report under the micro-entity framework if it meets the applicable eligibility requirements for the relevant accounting period, in which case FRS 105 — the financial reporting standard for qualifying micro-entities — may be relevant. That is not automatic. A newly incorporated company is not automatically a micro-entity, a company with modest activity does not automatically qualify, and the appropriate framework should be confirmed by reference to the company’s own circumstances and the rules in force for that period. Where the company does not qualify as a micro-entity, another framework such as the small-company regime may be more appropriate. It is also worth separating the different obligations that a company may face. First-year statutory accounts are one matter. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is a separate submission made to HMRC, and the company’s first Corporation Tax accounting period may not be identical to its statutory accounts period. A confirmation statement is a further, separate filing that keeps the company’s information at Companies House up to date. Preparing and filing first-year accounts does not, on its own, complete the company’s Corporation Tax, confirmation statement, VAT or any other compliance obligations. Each has its own purpose, its own destination and its own requirements.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Tiverton: Accurate Preparation, Straightforward Filing

First-year accounts often arrive sooner than directors expect, and the uncertainty tends to sit in the detail — which figures belong in the accounts, which reporting framework applies, and what actually needs to go to Companies House. Micro Entity Accounts can help you work through that. We can review the accounting records you hold, prepare the statutory accounts for your opening period, and support the Companies House filing where required, while being clear about which obligations sit with Companies House and which sit with HMRC. Directors remain responsible for the company’s compliance, but with structured support, transparent fees and no hidden costs, the first filing becomes a great deal more straightforward. If your company’s opening period is approaching or already underway, it is worth speaking to us early.

They are the first set of annual statutory accounts a company prepares after incorporation. They cover the company's initial accounting period, which usually runs from the incorporation date to the company's first accounting reference date, and they are delivered to Companies House where required. The level of detail depends on the reporting framework the company uses, but the accounts generally set out the company's financial position for that period, including a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account.

The deadline depends on the company's accounting reference date and its incorporation date, and it is set by reference to Companies House requirements rather than a single date that applies to everyone. Because the first accounting period can differ in length from later periods, it is worth confirming your company's specific deadline rather than assuming it follows the pattern of a standard year. We can check the position for your company and explain the dates that apply to it.

It depends on what the company has been doing, but typical records include bank transactions and statements, sales and income records, purchase invoices and business expenses, details of any assets purchased, share capital information, director loans or transactions, and any loans or finance arrangements. Where the company runs payroll or is VAT registered, payroll records and VAT records may also be relevant. If the company has had very little activity, the records required will be correspondingly lighter — but accurate accounting records still matter, because the accounts need to reflect what actually happened.

In most cases, yes. A company incorporated in the UK generally has a statutory accounts filing obligation for its accounting period, and that obligation is not removed simply because the company is new or has not yet started trading. Where a company has had no significant accounting transactions, its reporting position depends on its circumstances and the applicable rules — it is not automatically described as dormant, and dormant status has its own conditions. If you are unsure how your company's activity affects its filing position, that is worth clarifying early.

No, and this is one of the most common points of confusion. Statutory accounts are prepared for the company and delivered to Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is submitted to HMRC where the company has a Corporation Tax obligation. The figures in the accounts are often used when working out the company's Corporation Tax position, but the two filings have different purposes, different recipients and different deadlines. Completing one does not complete the other.

Some newly incorporated companies may qualify for the micro-entity framework, which allows simplified reporting under FRS 105. Eligibility is not automatic and is not based on the company being new or small in age — it depends on meeting the applicable eligibility requirements for the relevant accounting period, and those conditions need to be checked against the company's own figures and circumstances. If a company does not qualify as a micro-entity, another framework may apply instead. For directors in Tiverton setting up their first company, that assessment is usually best made alongside the accounts preparation itself.

No. A confirmation statement is a separate filing that keeps the company's information at Companies House up to date, such as directors, registered office and share details. It is not a set of accounts and it is not replaced by filing accounts. A limited company may need to submit a confirmation statement as well as its statutory accounts, and both obligations should be tracked separately.

Failing to deliver accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to Companies House consequences, which may include late filing penalties. The outcome is not necessarily the same in every case, and it depends on the circumstances and how late the filing is. Paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts — the accounts still have to be delivered. If accounts are already overdue, it is usually best to deal with the position promptly and get the filing completed.
