First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Stortford — Professional Preparation and Filing Support

Newly incorporated companies in Stortford take on statutory reporting duties from the moment they are formed, and the first set of accounts is often the one directors have the least experience of. We prepare the first statutory accounts from your accounting records, review the figures with you, and deliver the accounts to Companies House where required. Corporation Tax is handled separately by HMRC, so we also consider how the same accounting information supports a CT600 where the company needs to file one. Whether your company has been trading for a while or has only just begun, the focus is on accurate statutory accounts and a clear understanding of the compliance steps that follow.

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Incorporation

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company, and How Do They Fit Your Stortford Limited Company?

If you have recently incorporated a company in Stortford, the first set of statutory accounts is one of the earliest formal reporting tasks you will face. First-year accounts are the first statutory accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period. They are built from the company’s accounting records and normally include a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, along with any notes required by the reporting framework the company uses. The first accounting period generally runs from the incorporation date through to the company’s first accounting reference date, although the exact period depends on those dates rather than following an identical pattern for every company. Directors remain responsible for making sure the accounts are prepared and delivered, even when an accountant handles the work. Filing is not a single obligation. First-year statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is submitted to HMRC where the company has a Corporation Tax obligation, and the company’s first Corporation Tax accounting period may not match its statutory accounts period. A confirmation statement is separate again — it confirms the company’s registered information and does not replace the accounts. Filing one document does not complete the others. Some companies may qualify for the micro-entity framework if they meet the eligibility conditions for the accounting period in question, and qualifying micro-entities can use FRS 105, the reporting standard that applies to that framework. Qualification is not automatic for a newly incorporated company, and a quiet or low-activity year does not by itself make a company a micro-entity. Larger companies, or those within a group, may fall within the small-company regime or full reporting instead. We confirm which framework applies before the first-year accounts are finalised so the figures are presented on the correct basis.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

Business Turnover

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

Balance Sheet

Get Your First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Stortford Prepared Correctly From the Outset

Many directors incorporate a company and then discover that the first accounting period does not behave quite like later years — the period length, the reporting framework and the Companies House filing requirements all need to be checked rather than assumed. Micro Entity Accounts supports limited companies with the preparation and filing of their first statutory accounts, working from the records you hold, confirming the framework your company is eligible to use, and explaining what still needs to happen separately for HMRC and Companies House. If you are unsure what your new company needs to file, or you simply want the accounts prepared on a sound footing, speak to us about your first year and we will set out the next steps clearly.

First-year accounts are the first set of statutory accounts a limited company produces for its initial accounting period. They are prepared from the company's accounting records and normally include a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, together with any notes the chosen reporting framework requires. They cover the company's first accounting period, which is generally determined by the incorporation date and the accounting reference date. Once prepared, they are delivered to Companies House where required. They are a separate matter from a Corporation Tax Return, which is submitted to HMRC.

The filing deadline is not identical for every company. It is worked out from the company's incorporation date and its accounting reference date, and Companies House sets the deadline from those dates. The first accounting period often differs in length from the periods that follow, which is why it is worth checking the specific date recorded for your company rather than assuming a standard deadline applies. We can confirm the relevant date and plan the preparation work so the accounts are ready in good time.

It depends on what the company has done. Commonly needed records include bank statements and transaction listings, sales and income records, purchase invoices and expense receipts, details of asset purchases, director transactions and any loans or finance agreements. Share capital information is also required, along with payroll records where the company runs payroll and VAT records where it is VAT registered. Not every company will have all of these, and a company with limited activity may have far less to provide. We will confirm exactly what is relevant to your circumstances.

A company takes on reporting responsibilities when it is incorporated, and those responsibilities do not disappear simply because the company is new. Where the company is required to file statutory accounts, they must be delivered to Companies House. There are limited situations in which a different reporting route may apply, and whether that is available depends on the company's circumstances and the applicable rules. It is worth checking the position rather than assuming nothing is required, particularly for directors in Stortford who are dealing with their first filing.

A company that has not yet begun trading may still have reporting responsibilities, and the position depends on its circumstances and the applicable rules. Directors sometimes assume that nothing needs to be done where there have been no significant accounting transactions, but that is not automatically the case. Whether accounts are needed, and how they should be prepared, is a different question from whether the company is dormant, which is a defined status rather than a loose description of a quiet year. We can confirm what applies before you decide what to file.

No. First-year accounts are statutory accounts prepared for Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is submitted separately to HMRC where the company has Corporation Tax obligations. Filing one does not complete the other. A confirmation statement is separate again. The accounting information behind your statutory accounts often supports the tax return, but the two filings serve different purposes, go to different destinations and follow their own deadlines.

Possibly, but not automatically. A company may qualify for micro-entity reporting if it meets the eligibility requirements for the relevant accounting period, and qualifying micro-entities can use FRS 105. A newly incorporated company does not qualify simply because it is small or has had little activity, and eligibility should be assessed against the applicable conditions. Larger companies or those within a group may fall within the small-company framework or full reporting instead. We confirm the appropriate framework for your first year before the accounts are prepared.

Failing to file required accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to consequences from Companies House, which may include late filing penalties that generally increase the longer the accounts remain outstanding. The outcome is not identical for every company or every delay. Paying a penalty does not remove the obligation to file, so the accounts still need to be prepared and delivered. Where a deadline has already passed, the priority is usually to bring the accounts up to date. Appeal eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable rules.
