I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.

FAQs: Corporation Tax Returns For Micro Companies

Reach out to our UK team any time at info@microentityaccounts.co.uk — we are always happy to help.

A Corporation Tax Return is the submission a company makes to HMRC to report its taxable profit or loss for an accounting period and to establish how much Corporation Tax, if any, is payable. It is a company-level return rather than a personal one, and it is the director's responsibility to make sure it is filed when HMRC has issued a notice to file. That obligation applies even where the company has traded at a loss or expects nothing to pay, so it is worth checking your position rather than assuming no return is needed.

CT600 is simply the name of the form HMRC uses for a Company Tax Return. It is normally filed online and is accompanied by supporting information, which usually includes a copy of the statutory accounts and a tax computation showing how accounting profit has been adjusted to taxable profit. The CT600 goes to HMRC, not to Companies House, and it is a different document from the accounts a company delivers to the registrar.

No. There is no separate micro-entity CT600 and no separate Corporation Tax regime for smaller companies. A micro company deals with Corporation Tax through the same Corporation Tax Return process as any other company; what tends to differ is the accounting framework used to prepare the accounts and the level of detail involved. Whether a company meets the micro-entity criteria depends on the applicable thresholds, the accounting period and the company's own circumstances, so eligibility should be checked rather than assumed.

In practice it means reviewing the company's financial information for the period, considering the accounting profit or loss, identifying relevant tax adjustments, determining the taxable profit and preparing the required Corporation Tax Return for submission to HMRC. Depending on the company's circumstances, that can include looking at disallowable expenditure, capital allowances, losses brought forward and any reliefs that may apply. The detail varies from company to company, which is why the figures behind the return matter as much as the form itself.

Statutory accounts are prepared under an applicable accounting framework and are delivered to Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is submitted to HMRC. They are related but distinct documents with different purposes and different recipients, and one does not stand in for the other. Filing accounts with Companies House does not file a CT600, and filing a CT600 does not discharge other Companies House obligations such as the confirmation statement.

Because Corporation Tax rules do not follow accounting treatment in every area. Some costs recorded in the accounts may not be allowable for tax purposes, while allowances and reliefs may reduce the taxable figure. Adjustments are therefore normally made to reconcile the accounting profit to the taxable profit, and those adjustments are worked through as part of preparing the return.

No, and it is a common misunderstanding. The deadline for submitting the Corporation Tax Return and the deadline for paying any Corporation Tax due are separate, and they do not usually fall on the same date — payment can be due earlier than the filing date. HMRC bases both on the company's accounting period, so the sensible approach is to confirm the specific dates that apply to your company rather than working from assumption.

Dormancy for Corporation Tax purposes is not the same thing as dormancy for Companies House purposes, and the two are often confused. A company may be dormant for HMRC while still having Companies House filing duties, or the reverse. Whether an annual return is required depends on HMRC and the company's particular circumstances, and dormant status does not automatically remove other filing obligations.
