I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.

FAQs: Corporation Tax Returns For Micro Companies

A Corporation Tax Return, also called a Company Tax Return, is the report a limited company sends to HMRC for an accounting period. It sets out the company's income and chargeable profits, along with any allowances or reliefs being claimed, and it is normally supported by a tax computation and, in many cases, a copy of the statutory accounts. HMRC uses it to establish how much Corporation Tax the company owes, so the figures need to reconcile with the company's records.

The CT600 is the HMRC form used to submit a Company Tax Return. In practice it is filed online, usually alongside a tax computation and accounts prepared in the required iXBRL format. The CT600 is only the return itself — it is not a substitute for the statutory accounts a company may need to deliver to Companies House, and the two are handled by different bodies for different purposes.

No. There is no separate micro-entity CT600. Micro-entity status relates to the accounting framework a company may use when preparing its statutory accounts, not to Corporation Tax itself. A micro company generally deals with Corporation Tax through the same Corporation Tax Return process as any other limited company, subject to its own circumstances, accounting period and the applicable requirements. Whether a company meets the micro-entity criteria depends on the relevant thresholds and the period in question, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Preparation typically starts with a review of the company's financial information for the period, including the profit or loss shown in the accounts. From there, relevant tax adjustments are considered — items that are not allowable for Corporation Tax, capital allowances, losses brought forward and similar matters — so that taxable profit can be determined. The Corporation Tax Return and supporting computation are then prepared for submission to HMRC. The exact steps depend on the company's circumstances and the complexity of its transactions.

Statutory accounts are the company's financial statements, prepared under the applicable accounting framework and delivered to Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return is a tax filing — the CT600 and its computation — submitted to HMRC. They serve different purposes, go to different recipients and follow different rules, so filing accounts with Companies House does not complete the company's Corporation Tax obligations, and submitting a CT600 does not satisfy the Companies House filing requirements.

Corporation Tax rules do not follow accounting treatment exactly. Some expenses shown in the accounts may not be deductible for tax, while certain reliefs and allowances are claimed instead of, or in addition to, the amounts in the accounts. Depreciation is a common example: it is usually added back and replaced with capital allowances where they are available. The result is that the taxable profit used for the CT600 can differ from the accounting profit, which is why adjustments are considered during preparation.

Not necessarily. The date by which a Corporation Tax Return must be submitted and the date by which the Corporation Tax itself must be paid are separate deadlines, and they do not always fall on the same day. Payment generally falls earlier than the return filing date for many companies. Because the exact dates depend on the company's accounting period and its circumstances, it is sensible to confirm them early and to track both — miss one and the other is not automatically extended.

Being dormant for Corporation Tax purposes is not the same as being dormant for Companies House purposes. A company can be treated as dormant by HMRC while still having Companies House obligations, such as a confirmation statement, and a company that is dormant for Companies House may still have tax matters to notify. Whether a return is required, or whether the company needs to tell HMRC about its dormancy, depends on the circumstances. Dormancy does not automatically remove every filing obligation, and it is not necessarily a permanent position.
