We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why It Pays to Sort Them Out Early

Company accounts generally have to be delivered to Companies House by the applicable statutory deadline, which is set by reference to the company’s accounting reference period and its own circumstances rather than a single date that applies to every company. When that deadline passes and the required accounts have not been delivered, those accounts are overdue. An overdue filing does not mean the company has been suspended or removed from the register — it means the filing date has passed and the statutory accounts remain outstanding. Directors in Wisbech who find themselves in this position are usually best served by looking at it sooner rather than later, because the longer accounts stay outstanding, the more likely it is that further compliance difficulties and late-filing penalties may arise. The accounts that are actually required vary: a company may originally have been required to prepare micro-entity accounts, small-company accounts or another applicable form of statutory accounts, depending on its size, legal structure, accounting period and trading history. Where several accounting periods are outstanding, each one may need to be addressed separately. Bringing the position up to date normally means preparing the correct set of accounts for each affected period, having the figures reviewed and then delivering them to Companies House where required. It is also worth remembering that Companies House filing is only one part of the picture — outstanding confirmation statements, Corporation Tax Returns such as the CT600 and other HMRC matters may need to be dealt with separately, depending on the circumstances.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

How late the accounts are Private company Public company
Up to 1 month late
£150
£300
1 to 3 months late
£375
£750
3 to 6 months late
£750
£1,500
More than 6 months late
£1,500

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

It means the applicable statutory filing deadline has passed and the accounts that should have been delivered to Companies House are still outstanding. It does not mean the company has been suspended or removed from the register, and it does not automatically change the company's status. What it does mean is that the required statutory accounts still need to be prepared and filed, and that any late-filing consequences that apply under Companies House rules fall to be considered separately.

The reasons vary widely. In many cases the deadline was simply missed, records were incomplete, the director was unsure which reporting framework applied, or the company had changed accountants partway through a period. Whatever the reason, the filing obligation itself does not disappear because the deadline has passed. Once we understand the company's accounting period and what information is available, we can confirm what remains outstanding and how it can be brought up to date.

Yes — dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues. A dormant company can still have Companies House filing obligations, and if the required accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, those accounts can be overdue even though the company was not trading. Dormancy does not automatically remove the requirement to file annual accounts, so it is worth checking the position rather than assuming nothing needs to be done. Whether a dormant accounts filing is appropriate depends on the company's circumstances.

Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty where accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline. The penalty that may apply is not the same in every case and depends on how late the accounts are and the particular circumstances of the company. Penalties are handled separately from the filing obligation, and we cannot promise to reduce, remove or cancel a penalty. Where an appeal may be possible, eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, and we can review that with you.

Yes. Paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to prepare and deliver the outstanding accounts. The penalty and the outstanding filing are separate matters: the accounts remain overdue until they are filed with Companies House, and any penalty is dealt with according to the applicable rules. Settling one does not resolve the other.

Where several periods are outstanding, each one may need to be prepared and filed separately, so more than one set of statutory accounts may be required. Filing a single period does not automatically clear the others. We would normally start by reviewing the company's Companies House record and accounting periods to establish exactly what is missing, then work through the outstanding periods in a sensible order. The time this takes depends on the records available and the circumstances involved.

Possibly, depending on the circumstances. Some companies with overdue accounts may qualify for the micro-entity reporting framework, in which case the accounts could be prepared under FRS 105, the financial reporting standard that applies to qualifying entities using the micro-entity framework. However, micro-entity eligibility is not automatic and is not determined simply by the business being small. The company's size, legal structure and accounting period all need to be considered before deciding whether micro-entity accounts, small-company accounts or another applicable form of statutory accounts is appropriate.

Yes, they are separate compliance matters. Statutory accounts are filed with Companies House where required, while a Corporation Tax Return such as the CT600 is submitted to HMRC where applicable, and HMRC does not approve statutory accounts. Delivering overdue accounts to Companies House does not automatically satisfy any outstanding Corporation Tax obligations. If both are behind, each needs to be addressed in its own right, and we can help you understand what applies to your company.
