We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why Prompt Action Helps

Company accounts generally have to be delivered to Companies House by the applicable statutory deadline for the accounting reference period in question. That deadline is not the same for every company, and it can depend on factors such as whether it is a first set of accounts, the length of the accounting period, and the company’s particular circumstances. When the deadline passes and the required accounts have not been delivered, those accounts are treated as overdue — a filing deadline has been missed and a statutory obligation remains outstanding. Overdue accounts should not be left on the basis that the company is dormant, has not traded or has generated no income, because dormant companies can still have annual accounts filing obligations at Companies House. Where several accounting periods are outstanding, each period may need to be prepared and filed separately, and dealing with one set of accounts does not automatically resolve the others. Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, and while paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to file, the position may become more serious the longer accounts remain outstanding, with persistent non-compliance potentially increasing the risk of strike-off action. Bringing overdue accounts up to date is also separate from other compliance matters — a confirmation statement is filed with Companies House but is distinct from annual accounts, and any Corporation Tax Returns, such as CT600 returns, are submitted to HMRC where applicable. If you are a director in Storrington with outstanding accounts, we can review your filing position and assist with preparing and filing the required documents.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

Up to 1 month late

More than 6 months late

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Company accounts become overdue when the applicable filing deadline for an accounting period has passed and the required statutory accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. It does not, by itself, mean the company has been dissolved or removed from the register — it means a filing obligation is still outstanding. The deadline varies between companies and depends on factors such as the accounting reference period and whether it is a first set of accounts, so the first step is usually to establish exactly which periods remain unfiled.

There are many reasons accounts end up overdue, and they are often straightforward. Common causes include a change of accountant, incomplete bookkeeping records, a period where the company was dormant or not trading, a misunderstanding about which deadline applied, or a director assuming that no activity meant no filing was necessary. Whatever the reason, the underlying obligation to prepare and deliver the accounts where required does not disappear, so it is worth reviewing the position on Companies House records and addressing it.

Yes, in many cases. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues. A dormant company can still have annual accounts filing obligations at Companies House, and if those accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, they can be overdue. Whether a company qualifies for any filing exemption or a simpler reporting route depends on the circumstances of that company and the accounting period concerned, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Accounts delivered after the applicable deadline can attract a late-filing penalty from Companies House, and the requirement to file the accounts still remains. Penalty levels are not identical in every case and depend on the circumstances and how late the filing is. Filing the outstanding accounts and dealing with any penalty are separate matters: paying a penalty does not remove the obligation to deliver the accounts, and where an appeal is considered appropriate, eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules.

Where several accounting periods are outstanding, each one generally needs to be addressed separately, which may mean preparing and filing more than one set of accounts. Completing a single period does not automatically bring the others up to date. The work involved depends on the records available for each period and the reporting framework that applies, so we usually start with a review of what is outstanding before agreeing how to proceed.

Companies House may take action against companies that fail to meet their filing obligations, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of compulsory strike-off action — but an overdue filing does not automatically mean every company will be struck off. If a company has already received a strike-off notice, or has been dissolved, the situation may need separate restoration or legal advice rather than being treated as an ordinary overdue accounts filing. Filing outstanding accounts does not guarantee that any strike-off action will be halted or reversed.

They are separate compliance matters. Statutory accounts are filed with Companies House where required, while Corporation Tax Returns such as CT600 are submitted to HMRC where applicable — delivering accounts to Companies House does not automatically satisfy HMRC obligations. A confirmation statement is also submitted to Companies House but is distinct from annual accounts, and a company may still need to file it and keep its register information up to date. Where relevant, we can review these areas alongside the overdue accounts.

We can review your company's filing position, identify which accounting periods remain outstanding, and prepare the statutory accounts needed for each one. Some companies may qualify for the micro-entity framework and FRS 105, while others may need small-company accounts or another applicable reporting framework — that depends on the company's legal structure, accounting period and eligibility, so we confirm the position before preparing anything. We then assist with delivering the accounts to Companies House once you have reviewed and authorised them, and we explain clearly what still needs attention separately.
