We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why Acting Early Matters

Company accounts become overdue when the filing deadline that applies to your company has passed and the required accounts have not yet been delivered to Companies House. The deadline is not the same for every company — it depends on factors such as the company’s accounting reference period, whether it is a first set of accounts and its individual circumstances — so it is worth checking the specific date recorded for your company rather than assuming a standard timescale applies. Once that date has passed, the accounts remain outstanding and the obligation to prepare and file them does not disappear, whether the company traded during the period, had limited activity or was dormant. In practice, accounts become overdue for a variety of reasons: a director may have assumed the accountant was still engaged, bookkeeping records may be incomplete, a previous accountant may have stepped back, or the company may simply have been focused on trading. Whatever the cause, addressing outstanding statutory accounts sooner rather than later usually makes the process more straightforward, because the records are easier to reconstruct and the position is clearer. Companies House records are public, and companies with unmet filing obligations may face late-filing penalties and, where non-compliance continues, further action. It is also important to remember that statutory accounts filed at Companies House are only one part of your company’s compliance picture — confirmation statements, Corporation Tax Returns such as CT600 and any HMRC matters are dealt with separately. Directors in Sunderland who need help with Overdue Company Accounts Filing can ask us to review the outstanding position, confirm which periods remain to be filed and prepare the accounts using the reporting framework that applies to the company.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

How late the accounts are Private company Public company
Up to 1 month late
£150
£300
1 to 3 months late
£375
£750
3 to 6 months late
£750
£1,500
More than 6 months late
£1,500
£3,000

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Overdue company accounts are statutory accounts that should already have been delivered to Companies House but have not been filed by the applicable deadline. The accounts do not stop being due simply because the date has passed — the filing obligation remains until the required accounts are prepared and submitted, subject to the requirements that apply to your company.

Yes. The deadline passing does not remove the obligation to prepare and deliver the required accounts to Companies House. In most cases the outstanding accounts still need to be prepared for each affected accounting period and filed as soon as they are ready, although the exact requirements depend on the company's circumstances and reporting framework.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate matters. A dormant company can still have Companies House filing obligations, and if the required accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, those accounts are overdue regardless of the company's trading position. Dormant status on its own does not exempt a company from filing, although the content of the accounts prepared may differ.

Where accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, Companies House may impose a late-filing penalty. The penalty position is not identical for every company, and it depends on the circumstances and the period of delay. Filing the outstanding accounts does not automatically remove or cancel any penalty that has already arisen, so the two matters may need to be dealt with separately.

No. Paying a penalty and filing the outstanding accounts are separate obligations. Settling a penalty does not satisfy the requirement to prepare and deliver the accounts to Companies House where they remain outstanding, and the accounts will still need to be filed. Where a penalty has been issued, whether an appeal may be appropriate depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules.

If several periods are outstanding, each set of accounts generally needs to be prepared and filed separately, and the periods may need to be dealt with in the correct order. Filing one set of accounts does not automatically resolve the others. We can review how many periods remain outstanding and set out what is required for each one before work begins.

Yes, they are separate compliance matters. Statutory accounts are filed with Companies House where required, while Corporation Tax Returns such as CT600 are submitted to HMRC where applicable. Delivering overdue accounts to Companies House does not automatically satisfy any outstanding Corporation Tax obligations, and where both are overdue they may need to be addressed as distinct items.

We can review your outstanding filing position, confirm which accounting periods remain to be prepared and identify the reporting framework that applies to your company — whether that is micro-entity accounts under FRS 105 where the company qualifies, small-company accounts or another applicable form of statutory accounts. We then prepare the accounts for your review and authorisation, assist with delivery to Companies House and explain any separate matters, such as confirmation statements or HMRC filings, that may also need attention.
