We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Overdue Company Accounts Mean for Your Company

Company accounts become overdue when the applicable statutory filing deadline has passed and the required accounts have not yet been delivered to Companies House. The deadline itself is not the same for every company — it depends on factors such as the company’s accounting reference period and its individual circumstances — so it is worth checking the company’s own records and filing history rather than working on an assumption. Once a set of accounts is outstanding, the obligation to prepare and file it does not disappear; it remains until the accounts have been delivered, and the longer an accounting period stays overdue, the more likely it is that further consequences, including a late-filing penalty, may follow. Directors in Pocklington should also keep in mind that Companies House accounts, Corporation Tax Returns submitted to HMRC and confirmation statements are separate obligations, so resolving one does not automatically resolve the others. Where more than one accounting period is outstanding, each period generally needs to be prepared and filed in its own right. Micro Entity Accounts can review your position, confirm which periods remain due and assist with preparing and filing the required documents.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

How late the accounts are Private company Public company
Up to 1 month late

£375
£750
3 to 6 months late
£750
£1,500
More than 6 months late
£1,500

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

It means the statutory filing deadline for a particular accounting period has passed and the required accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. This is a filing position rather than a change to the company's legal status. If you are not certain whether the accounts were submitted, the company's filing history at Companies House is usually the quickest way to check, and we can review that on your behalf.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate matters. A dormant company can still have Companies House filing obligations, and if the accounts for a period were not delivered by the applicable deadline, that period can be overdue even though the company was not trading. Depending on the circumstances, the accounts required may be simpler than those of a trading company, but they still need to be prepared and filed where required.

Where accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty. The level of any penalty depends on factors such as how late the accounts are and the company's own circumstances, so no single outcome can be described as typical. Persistent non-compliance can also increase the risk of further action by Companies House, which is why it is usually best to deal with outstanding periods as soon as the records allow.

Yes. Paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to prepare and deliver the outstanding accounts — the penalty and the filing obligation are separate matters, and the accounts remain outstanding until they have been filed. In some cases an appeal against a penalty may be available, but eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, so it is worth taking advice before relying on that route.

Each outstanding period generally needs its own set of accounts, prepared and filed separately, usually in the correct chronological order. Filing one period does not automatically clear the others. We can establish how many periods remain due, look at what records are available for each and agree a sensible order in which to work through them.

Some companies with overdue accounts may meet the criteria for the micro-entity framework, and where they do, micro-entity accounts prepared under FRS 105 may be appropriate. Not every company qualifies, however, and eligibility depends on the company's legal structure, accounting period and individual circumstances. We confirm the correct reporting framework for each period before preparation begins, rather than assuming a small company will automatically fall into the micro-entity category.

Yes. Statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required, while a CT600 Corporation Tax Return is submitted to HMRC where applicable, and a confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing. Bringing overdue accounts up to date does not automatically satisfy Corporation Tax or confirmation statement obligations, so it is worth checking that each requirement has been dealt with.

We start by reviewing your company's filing position and identifying which accounting periods remain outstanding. We then prepare the accounts for those periods using the records available — commonly bookkeeping records, bank statements, invoices, expense details, previous accounts and current company information, although the exact requirements vary depending on the company and the period concerned. Once the accounts have been reviewed and approved by the directors, we can assist with filing them at Companies House and explain any related matters that may still need attention.
