We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why Acting Early Matters

Limited companies generally have to deliver annual accounts to Companies House by a statutory deadline, and those accounts become overdue once that date passes without the required filing being made. The deadline itself is not identical for every company — it depends on factors such as the accounting reference period, whether it has been changed, and whether the company is filing for a first period or an established one — so the starting point is always to confirm the correct filing date for the period in question. Accounts can fall behind for many reasons: a change of accountant, a period of illness, incomplete records, a misunderstanding about what was due, or simply a busy trading year. Whatever the cause, the filing obligation usually remains, and the longer an outstanding period is left unaddressed, the more difficult the catch-up tends to become, because records, bank information and supporting documents may be harder to reconstruct later. Companies House filing is a separate matter from Corporation Tax, so even where accounts are prepared for Companies House, a CT600 Corporation Tax Return may still need to be submitted to HMRC where applicable, and a confirmation statement may still need to be filed independently. Micro-entity accounts, small-company accounts or another form of statutory accounts may be appropriate depending on the company’s size, legal structure, accounting period and reporting framework — not every company qualifies for the same treatment, and a company should not be assumed to be a micro-entity simply because it is small. Dormant companies are not automatically exempt either; dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues, and a dormant company can still have accounts that are late. Late-filing penalties may apply where accounts are delivered after the deadline, and that penalty position is separate from the requirement to file the accounts themselves. If a strike-off notice has already been received, or the company has been dissolved, the matter may need to be handled as a restoration or legal issue rather than an ordinary filing catch-up, so it is worth seeking advice promptly on your specific circumstances.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Company accounts become overdue when the applicable statutory filing deadline has passed and the required accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. The deadline is not the same for every company — it depends on the accounting reference period and the company's particular circumstances, so the first step is to confirm the correct date for the period in question. Being overdue does not mean the company has been removed from the register; it means the filing obligation remains outstanding.

Yes. In most cases the obligation to prepare and deliver the accounts remains even though the original deadline has passed, and waiting longer does not remove that requirement. The sensible approach is to establish exactly which periods are outstanding and deal with them in order. It is also worth checking whether other filings are outstanding at the same time, such as a confirmation statement, since these are separate from the annual accounts and are dealt with separately.

Yes, it can. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate matters, and a dormant company may still have accounts filing obligations at Companies House. Where accounts are required, they still need to be prepared and delivered by the applicable deadline, and dormancy does not automatically exempt a company from filing. If the company has not been trading, we can review its position and confirm what is actually due.

Companies House may impose a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, and the consequences can become more serious the longer the accounts remain outstanding. Persistent failure to meet filing obligations can also increase the risk of further action by Companies House, which in some cases may include compulsory strike-off procedures — though this is not automatic and depends on the circumstances. If a strike-off notice has already been issued, or the company has been dissolved, that situation may need separate restoration or legal advice rather than being treated as a routine late filing.

No. The penalty and the filing obligation are separate matters. Paying any penalty that may apply does not satisfy the requirement to prepare and deliver the outstanding accounts, and the accounts still need to be filed. Equally, an accountant cannot automatically reduce, cancel or remove a Companies House penalty, since eligibility for any appeal or reduction depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules.

Where several periods are outstanding, each one may need to be addressed separately, which usually means preparing more than one set of accounts and dealing with the relevant Companies House filings in turn. We can review the position, identify the periods involved and work through them in a sensible order, depending on the records available. It is also worth remembering that Corporation Tax is a separate matter: if CT600 Corporation Tax Returns are outstanding as well, those are submitted to HMRC where applicable and are not resolved simply by filing accounts at Companies House.

Possibly, where the company qualifies for the micro-entity reporting framework — but not every company does. Eligibility depends on the company's size, legal structure, accounting period and circumstances, and a company should not be assumed to be a micro-entity just because it is small. Where the micro-entity framework applies and the qualifying conditions are met, FRS 105 is the financial reporting standard used for those accounts. We can consider the appropriate framework as part of preparing the outstanding accounts.

We assist company directors in Penrith and the surrounding area with preparing and filing outstanding accounts. That typically starts with a review of what has been filed and what remains outstanding, followed by preparation of the accounts for the relevant period or periods, explanation of the figures for your review and approval, and support with delivery to Companies House. We keep the process clear and communicative, and our pricing is set out in advance with no hidden costs.
