We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Overdue Company Accounts Filing Really Means

Limited companies are generally required to deliver annual accounts to Companies House by the applicable statutory deadline, which is normally calculated from the company’s accounting reference date. When that deadline passes and the accounts have still not been delivered, those accounts are treated as overdue — the obligation itself does not disappear simply because time has moved on. The exact deadline depends on the company’s accounting reference period and its individual circumstances, so it is worth checking the filing history on the Companies House record rather than assuming a date. It is also important to remember that dormancy or a lack of trading does not automatically remove the requirement to file, and a dormant company can still have overdue accounts if it missed the relevant deadline. Companies House may apply a late-filing penalty once accounts are delivered after the deadline, and the longer accounts remain outstanding, the more serious the position can become, including an increased risk of further compliance action. Where more than one accounting period is outstanding, each period may need to be prepared and filed separately, and overdue accounts are also a different matter from a confirmation statement or from Corporation Tax Returns such as the CT600, which are submitted to HMRC where applicable. Directors in Melbourn Cambs who deal with outstanding accounts promptly tend to have far more options available than those who leave the position to develop, so the sensible first step is a straightforward review of what has been filed and what is still missing.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

How late the accounts are Private company Public company
Up to 1 month late
£150
£300
1 to 3 months late
£375
£750
3 to 6 months late
£750
£1,500
More than 6 months late
£1,500
£3,000

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Company accounts become overdue when the applicable statutory filing deadline has passed and the required accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. The deadline is normally based on the company's accounting reference date and its particular circumstances, so it is not the same for every company. If you are unsure whether a deadline has passed, the filing history held on the Companies House record is usually the quickest way to confirm the position.

Yes. The filing obligation does not disappear because the deadline has passed. Outstanding statutory accounts generally still need to be prepared and delivered to Companies House, and until that happens the company's filing record remains incomplete. The form the accounts take will depend on the company's size, reporting framework and accounting period, and we can review which framework is appropriate for your circumstances.

It can. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate matters. A dormant company may still have annual accounts filing obligations, and if the relevant deadline passed without the required accounts being delivered, those accounts would be overdue in the same way as any other company's. Dormant status does not automatically exempt a company from its Companies House filing requirements.

Companies House can apply a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, and the penalty is generally determined by how late the filing is. Penalty amounts and bandings are set by Companies House rather than by us, so we cannot predict what may apply. It is also worth knowing that paying any penalty does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts — the two matters are handled separately.

Multiple outstanding periods do happen, usually when a company has fallen behind and stopped filing altogether. Each accounting period generally needs to be prepared and delivered separately, so filing one set of accounts will not automatically resolve the others. Depending on the circumstances, we can work through the outstanding periods in order and explain how each one is progressing.

It varies from company to company and depends on the accounting period being prepared. Typically we would look for bookkeeping records, bank statements, invoices, expense records, details of any assets or liabilities, previous accounts and basic company information. If records are incomplete, we can discuss what alternative evidence may be available so that the accounts can still be prepared accurately.

No, they are separate compliance matters. Statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required, while a CT600 Corporation Tax Return is submitted to HMRC where applicable. A confirmation statement is also filed with Companies House and is entirely separate from annual accounts. Bringing overdue accounts up to date therefore does not automatically settle any outstanding confirmation statement or Corporation Tax position.

We start by reviewing your company's filing history and identifying which accounting periods remain outstanding. From there, our qualified accountants — regulated by ICAEW, ACCA and AAT — can prepare the statutory accounts, explain the reporting framework that applies to your company and assist with delivering the documents to Companies House for your review and authorisation. Where a strike-off notice or dissolution has already arisen, that situation can involve separate restoration or legal steps, so we would discuss the position with you before proceeding.
