We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why It Is Worth Acting Now

Company accounts generally have to be delivered to Companies House by the applicable statutory deadline, which is determined by reference to the company’s accounting reference period and its individual circumstances. When that date passes and the required accounts have not been delivered, the accounts become overdue — whether or not the company has been trading, has generated income or has anything substantial to report. A company that has never traded may still have filing obligations, and dormant status does not by itself remove the requirement to file annual accounts. Directors across Lurgan who find themselves in this position are often dealing with a mixture of practical issues: incomplete bookkeeping records, a change of accountant, a busy trading period or simply a deadline that passed unnoticed. The longer accounts remain outstanding, the more the position can develop. Companies House may take action against companies that do not meet their filing obligations, late-filing penalties may apply depending on the circumstances, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of further action being taken. Bringing the position up to date usually means preparing the statutory accounts for each period that remains outstanding and delivering them to Companies House, and where more than one accounting period is outstanding, each period may need to be addressed separately. Corporation Tax obligations submitted to HMRC, confirmation statements and the accuracy of other Companies House information are separate matters that may also need attention, so it is sensible to review the company’s overall compliance position rather than one document in isolation. The accounts a company needs to prepare depend on its legal structure, accounting period, size, reporting framework and circumstances, and the appropriate approach can only be confirmed once those details have been reviewed.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

A company's accounts become overdue when the filing deadline that applies to its accounting reference period has passed and the required statutory accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. That deadline is not identical for every company — it depends on the company's accounting reference period and its circumstances, so two companies with different year ends will not necessarily share the same date. If the accounts have not been filed, the obligation to prepare and file them remains, and the position should be reviewed rather than left in place.

Yes. A missed deadline does not remove the requirement to file. The accounts still need to be prepared and delivered to Companies House where required, and in most cases the sooner the position is brought up to date, the better. Filing late may mean a late-filing penalty applies, but any penalty is a separate matter from the filing obligation itself — paying a penalty does not remove the need to file the outstanding accounts.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues. A dormant company may still have annual accounts filing obligations at Companies House, and if the required accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, they can become overdue even though the company has not been trading, has no income and has no significant transactions to report. Dormant accounts are not the same thing as overdue accounts, even where a company is both dormant and behind on its filings.

Companies House can impose late-filing penalties when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline. The penalty that may apply depends on the circumstances, including how late the accounts are, and it is not optional or something a company can choose to disregard. Penalty appeals are possible in limited situations depending on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, but eligibility is not guaranteed. The longer accounts remain outstanding, the more serious the consequences may become, which is why directors usually prefer to address late accounts promptly.

Where more than one accounting period is outstanding, each period will generally need its own set of statutory accounts prepared and delivered to Companies House, so filing one set does not automatically resolve the others. We would review the company's filing history, confirm which periods remain outstanding and prepare the accounts for each one in turn. The amount of work involved depends on the records available for each period, and if records are incomplete or missing, we will discuss what can reasonably be reconstructed.

Companies House may take action against companies that do not meet their filing obligations, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of compulsory strike-off action being taken. It does not follow that every company with overdue accounts will be dissolved, and the position depends on the individual circumstances. If a company has already received a strike-off notice, or has been dissolved, that situation usually requires separate advice — including restoration or legal advice — rather than being treated as an ordinary overdue accounts filing.

Yes. Statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required, while Corporation Tax Returns such as CT600 are submitted to HMRC where applicable. A confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing that keeps the company's registered information up to date. Submitting overdue accounts to Companies House does not automatically satisfy HMRC Corporation Tax obligations, and it does not replace a confirmation statement, so a company behind on its filings may need to deal with several separate compliance matters.

We start by reviewing your company's filing position and confirming which accounting periods remain outstanding. Our accountants, who are qualified and regulated by ICAEW, ACCA and AAT, then prepare the statutory accounts required for each period — whether those fall under the micro-entity framework, small-company reporting or another applicable framework, depending on the company's eligibility and circumstances. Where a company qualifies for the micro-entity framework, micro-entity accounts may be appropriate, with FRS 105 being the financial reporting standard that applies to qualifying entities using that framework. We explain what information we need from you, such as bookkeeping records, bank statements, invoices, expense records, previous accounts and company details, and we support you with delivery to Companies House. Accounts are reviewed and authorised by you before submission. We cannot guarantee Companies House acceptance or the removal of any penalty, but we can make the process clear, organised and properly documented.
