We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

Its only transactions are those that Companies House disregards when determining dormancy.
It is being retained for a future business purpose, subject to its actual activities and transactions.

Dormant company accounts are annual accounts prepared for a company that is dormant for accounting purposes. They are filed with Companies House and typically contain a balance sheet and certain explanatory notes, but they are simplified compared with full statutory accounts. The exact content depends on the company's reporting framework and eligibility, including whether it qualifies as a micro-entity. Filing dormant company accounts does not mean that no filing is needed; instead, it is the method by which an eligible dormant company meets its annual accounts obligation.
In most cases, yes. Even if a company is dormant for Companies House purposes, it will generally still have to file annual accounts each year unless a specific exemption applies. Filing dormant company accounts shows the company's position and keeps its record up to date, and a confirmation statement must also be submitted separately. We can confirm what applies to your particular company and prepare the required documents for filing.
Some dormant companies may also qualify as micro-entities and can therefore use the micro-entity reporting framework, which is even simpler than the standard small companies regime. However, dormancy and micro-entity status are separate tests. Eligibility depends on the company's size, legal structure and accounting period, and not every dormant company will automatically qualify. We can review your circumstances and help prepare the accounts framework most appropriate for your company.
Being dormant for Companies House purposes relates to the company's accounting transactions and its obligation to file annual accounts. HMRC's dormancy test for Corporation Tax is different and focuses on whether the company is carrying on a business or has any income, expenses or Corporation Tax liabilities. A company may be dormant under both frameworks or only under one. Filing dormant company accounts with Companies House does not automatically notify HMRC, and separate steps may be needed if your company is also dormant for Corporation Tax. We can help you navigate the requirements of both authorities.
Yes, a confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing from annual accounts. It confirms details such as the registered office, directors, shareholders and people with significant control. Most companies, including dormant companies, must submit a confirmation statement every 12 months to keep their record accurate. If it is required and not filed, the company may face late filing consequences. We can assist with preparing and filing confirmation statements for dormant companies in Edinburgh.
This depends on the company's Corporation Tax position. If a company is dormant for Corporation Tax purposes and HMRC has agreed that no further returns are required, then a CT600 Corporation Tax Return may not need to be submitted. However, the company must usually notify HMRC of its dormancy and should not assume that this status is automatic. If HMRC still expects a return, a CT600 may be needed even for a dormant company. We can review your HMRC status and advise on the appropriate filings.
To prepare dormant company accounts, we typically need the company's name, registered number and accounting period, along with the opening and closing balance sheet positions. We also need to know whether the company has had any significant accounting transactions during the period, because the dormancy rules are strict. Our accountants can guide you through the information required and will often be able to work from existing records or the company's previous filings. We can also assist where dormant company accounts have become overdue.
