CT600 Tax Return Filing in Knutsford: Prepare and Submit Your Company Tax Return to HMRC

CT600 Tax Return Filing is the process of preparing and submitting a company’s Company Tax Return to HMRC to report its Corporation Tax position for an accounting period. If your company is based in Knutsford or the surrounding Cheshire area, professional support can take the guesswork out of the process — gathering the figures from your accounting records, reviewing the tax adjustments that may be needed, preparing the Corporation Tax computation, and submitting the CT600 to HMRC on your behalf. It is important to understand that the CT600 is separate from your statutory accounts, which are filed with Companies House, and separate again from your Confirmation Statement. The figures in your accounts are the starting point, but your taxable profit is not always the same as your accounting profit, because Corporation Tax calculations may require adjustments. Working with an experienced team gives you accuracy, clarity and convenience, so you can focus on running the business while your Corporation Tax filing is handled properly.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

What Does a CT600 Mean for a Micro-Entity Company?

There is no separate official “micro-entity CT600” — the CT600 is simply the form HMRC uses for a Company Tax Return, and it is used by companies of all sizes. Micro-entity status relates to the accounting framework a company uses and how it prepares and files its accounts; it does not create a different tax return or determine a company’s Corporation Tax liability by itself. That said, a company that operates as a micro-entity can still be within the charge to Corporation Tax and, where required, will need to submit a Company Tax Return (CT600) to HMRC reporting its position for the accounting period. The CT600 is not the same thing as the statutory accounts filed with Companies House, although the figures in those accounts often form the starting point for the tax calculation. In practice, a small or micro company’s bookkeeping and accounts are reviewed, adjustments are considered, and a Corporation Tax computation is prepared to arrive at the taxable profit. Taxable profit can differ from accounting profit because items such as disallowable expenditure, capital allowances and non-taxable income may need to be added back or deducted. Being a micro-entity does not automatically mean Corporation Tax is payable — whether a liability arises depends on the company’s own circumstances and its taxable position for the period — and filing the CT600 is a separate obligation from paying any Corporation Tax that is due.

A CT600 is the form HMRC uses for a Company Tax Return. It is the return a company submits to report its Corporation Tax position for an accounting period, setting out details such as the company's name and Unique Taxpayer Reference, the accounting period covered, the figures drawn from the accounts, and the resulting Corporation Tax position. In practice, a CT600 is usually filed electronically and supported by the statutory accounts for the period and a Corporation Tax computation showing how taxable profit was arrived at. It is a company tax filing made to HMRC, and it is not the same document as the accounts filed with Companies House.

A company generally needs to file a Company Tax Return where it is within the charge to Corporation Tax for an accounting period. That commonly includes UK-resident limited companies carrying on a trade, but the position is not identical for every company: some dormant or non-trading companies, companies in their first period, and companies with particular circumstances may not have the same filing requirement, and certain exemption conditions can apply. Because the answer depends on your company's own situation, it is worth checking whether a return is required for each accounting period rather than assuming one way or the other.

Yes, they are two separate filings with two separate purposes. Statutory accounts are prepared under an applicable accounting framework and filed with Companies House; they show the company's financial performance and position for the period. A CT600 is a Company Tax Return submitted to HMRC and reports the company's Corporation Tax position. The profits shown in the accounts are usually the starting point for the tax calculation, but they are not automatically the taxable profit. This is why accounts preparation and Corporation Tax filing are related processes, yet still distinct obligations with different recipients.

Micro-entity status relates to the accounting framework used to prepare and file accounts — it does not replace or change the Company Tax Return. A company that qualifies as a micro-entity can still be within the charge to Corporation Tax and, where required, needs to file a CT600 with HMRC for the accounting period. Equally, operating as a micro-entity does not automatically mean that Corporation Tax is payable; that depends on the company's taxable position and its circumstances. So the accounting framework affects how the accounts are prepared, while the CT600 deals with the tax reporting.

They work together but are not the same thing. The Corporation Tax computation is the set of workings that takes your accounting profit and adjusts it — for example by adding back disallowable expenditure, allowing for capital allowances, or removing non-taxable income — to arrive at the taxable profit and the resulting Corporation Tax figure. The CT600 is the return itself, containing the summary boxes and figures submitted to HMRC. In most cases the computation is prepared alongside the return and submitted as supporting information, so that HMRC can see how the numbers in the CT600 were calculated.

The starting point is normally the profit shown in the company's accounts for the accounting period. From there, the Corporation Tax computation applies adjustments. Expenses that are not allowable for tax purposes may need to be added back, capital expenditure may be dealt with through capital allowances rather than depreciation, and income that is not taxable may need to be deducted. Losses brought forward or carried back can also affect the position, depending on the circumstances. Once the adjustments are made, the taxable profit is determined and the applicable Corporation Tax treatment for the period is applied. Because the adjustments vary from company to company, the difference between accounting profit and taxable profit is rarely the same for two businesses.

No — the filing obligation and the payment obligation are separate. Submitting the CT600 tells HMRC what the company's Corporation Tax position is for the period; it does not itself transfer any money. A return may show a liability to pay, a nil position, or even an overpayment or repayment depending on the company's circumstances and what has already been paid. Payment has its own arrangements and its own due dates, which can differ from the filing date. It is worth keeping the two in mind separately so that neither is overlooked.

Filing a Company Tax Return after the due date can lead to penalties and, where tax remains unpaid, interest or further charges — the exact outcome depends on how late the return is and on the company's circumstances and HMRC's rules at the time. Late filing can also slow down HMRC's processing and create follow-up correspondence that takes time to resolve. If you think a return may be late, or you have received a notice or penalty from HMRC, it is usually best to act quickly: get the figures finalised, submit the return as soon as you can, and consider taking professional advice on your specific position rather than assuming the worst.
