I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Incorporation

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

Set by default to the last day of the month of incorporation, one year on.

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company?

First-year accounts are the very first set of statutory accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period. That period normally begins on the date of incorporation and runs to the company’s first accounting reference date, which is why the first period does not always look like the twelve-month periods that follow. Depending on the incorporation date and the accounting reference date, a first period can be longer or shorter than a year, and the filing deadline attached to it is worked out from those dates rather than from a single rule that applies to every company. The accounts themselves summarise the company’s financial position and performance for that period, typically through a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, together with any notes and the required statements. For directors of a company registered in Tenterden, the practical question is usually simpler: what has to be prepared, and what has to be sent to Companies House? If the company meets the eligibility conditions for the relevant accounting period, it may be able to report under the micro-entity framework, using FRS 105, the financial reporting standard that applies to qualifying entities preparing micro-entity accounts. That is not automatic. Eligibility depends on the company’s size and circumstances, and some companies report under the small-company regime instead. It is also worth separating three things that are often confused. First-year statutory accounts are prepared for the members and filed with Companies House where required. A Corporation Tax Return, such as a CT600, is submitted separately to HMRC where the company has a Corporation Tax obligation, and the two filings have different purposes and different destinations. A confirmation statement is a further separate requirement that keeps the company’s public record up to date. Completing one does not complete the others, and filing accounts does not automatically settle the company’s tax position or its confirmation statement.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

Business Turnover

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

Balance Sheet

Get Your First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Tenterden Prepared Properly

Many directors incorporate a company, begin trading, and only later realise that the first set of statutory accounts is not simply a repeat of a standard year-end exercise. The period is different, the reporting framework has to be considered, and the information needed to prepare the accounts is rarely sitting neatly in one place. Micro Entity Accounts helps limited companies in Tenterden work through that first set of accounts with clear pricing and no hidden costs, covering the review of your accounting records, preparation of the statutory accounts and filing with Companies House where required. If anything about your first accounting period, your Companies House requirements or the framework that applies to your company is unclear, it is worth speaking to someone before the deadline becomes a problem.

They are the first set of statutory annual accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period, which normally starts on the date of incorporation and ends on the company's first accounting reference date. The accounts set out the company's financial position for that period, usually through a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, along with any notes and the required statements. They are prepared for the company's members and filed with Companies House where required.

There is no single answer that fits every company. The deadline is worked out from the company's accounting reference date and its incorporation date, and the first set of accounts is treated differently from later years. Because the first accounting period can be longer or shorter than twelve months, the safest approach is to check the specific due date recorded against your company at Companies House rather than assuming it matches a standard year end. We can review your company's dates and explain what applies to your situation.

It depends on what the company has done since incorporation. Typically we would look at bank statements and transactions, sales or income records, purchase invoices and business expenses, details of any assets purchased, director loans or transactions with the company, share capital information, and any payroll or VAT records where those apply. If the company has had very little activity, we still need to see the records that exist so the accounts reflect the actual position rather than an assumption about it.

In most cases, yes. A newly incorporated company still has statutory accounts obligations, and the fact that it has only recently been formed does not remove them. Where the company has not started trading or has had limited activity, the reporting position depends on the company's specific circumstances and the applicable rules rather than being automatically treated as dormant. Filing first-year accounts with Companies House is also not the same as submitting a Corporation Tax Return, which goes to HMRC.

The underlying purpose is the same, but the first set is different in some important ways. The first accounting period usually runs from incorporation rather than from a previous year end, so it may cover more or less than twelve months, and the filing deadline is calculated differently. For that reason, directors in Tenterden and elsewhere are often surprised by the timing of their first accounts, even when they are comfortable with the annual cycle that follows.

It depends on the circumstances. A company that has been incorporated but has not yet started trading may still have filing obligations, and having little or no activity does not automatically make a company dormant in the statutory sense. The correct treatment depends on whether any transactions have taken place, what they were, and the applicable rules. It is worth having the position reviewed before deciding that nothing needs to be filed.

No. Statutory accounts are filed with Companies House where required, while a Corporation Tax Return such as a CT600 is submitted to HMRC where the company has a Corporation Tax obligation. The two are separate filings with separate purposes, and completing one does not complete the other. The figures in the accounts are often used as a starting point when working out the company's Corporation Tax position, but the company's first Corporation Tax accounting period and its statutory accounts period may not necessarily be identical.

Some newly incorporated companies do qualify for the micro-entity framework and report under FRS 105, but it is not automatic and not every company with low turnover will meet the eligibility conditions. The framework that applies depends on the company's size and circumstances for the relevant accounting period, and some companies fall under the small-company regime instead. We can assess which framework is likely to suit your company before the accounts are prepared.

Failing to file required accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to consequences from Companies House, and the outcome is not identical in every case. Paying any penalty that arises does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts, so the priority is usually to get the accounts completed and delivered. If you believe there were genuine reasons for the delay, it may be worth discussing whether an appeal is appropriate, as eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable rules.
