First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Bury St Edmunds, Prepared and Filed with Professional Support

Once your company’s first accounting period comes to an end, a set of statutory accounts has to be prepared, and for many directors that is the first time they have dealt with company accounts at all. First Year Accounts for Limited Company directors in Bury St Edmunds is the area we specialise in at Micro Entity Accounts: reviewing your accounting records, preparing a balance sheet and profit and loss account where applicable, and supporting the delivery of those accounts to Companies House where required. If the company also has Corporation Tax obligations, a CT600 is submitted separately to HMRC, so the accounts filing and the tax return should be planned for side by side rather than treated as one and the same task.

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.

I had a positive experience with Accotax. The work was completed promptly, my tax return was successfully filed, and I received a refund of overpaid tax. I found the cooperation efficient and helpful. Special thanks to Muhammad Saifullah for his assistance.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Incorporation

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

Set by default to the last day of the month of incorporation, one year on.

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company?

First-year accounts are the first set of statutory accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period. They are not optional simply because the company is new — incorporation brings reporting obligations with it, and the first accounts are usually the first formal set of figures a director has to sign off. The first accounting period normally begins on the date of incorporation and ends on the company’s first accounting reference date, which is set when the company is registered at Companies House. That opening period does not always match a standard twelve-month year, and the deadline for delivering a first set of accounts is calculated differently from later years, so the dates recorded against your own company are what matter rather than a general rule of thumb. The accounts typically include a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, along with the notes and statements required by the reporting framework the company uses. Where a company meets the eligibility conditions for the micro-entity framework, it may be able to prepare and file simpler accounts under FRS 105, which is the financial reporting standard applicable to qualifying micro-entities. That eligibility is assessed for the relevant accounting period — being newly incorporated does not automatically make a company a micro-entity, and it is worth confirming the position rather than assuming it. First-year statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required. They are a separate matter from a Corporation Tax Return such as a CT600, which is submitted to HMRC, and from the confirmation statement, which confirms the company’s registered details are current. Filing the accounts does not by itself complete any of those other obligations, and a company’s first Corporation Tax accounting period may not line up exactly with its statutory accounts period, so the two should be considered together but kept distinct. Directors in Bury St Edmunds who are unsure which framework applies to them can have that reviewed before preparation begins.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

Business Turnover

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

Balance Sheet

Balance sheet total of £500,000 or less.(£316,000 previously)

Get Your First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Bury St Edmunds Prepared Correctly

First Year Accounts for Limited Company is often the filing that raises the most questions after incorporation. Directors want to know whether the bank statements are enough, which invoices and receipts need to be kept, whether a profit and loss account is needed this year, and how the Companies House filing sits alongside anything owed to HMRC. Micro Entity Accounts works with newly incorporated and newly trading limited companies in Bury St Edmunds on precisely those points — reviewing the accounting records, preparing the first-year statutory accounts, and supporting the filing with Companies House where required. If you would rather have your first accounting period looked over by someone who handles new companies regularly, get in touch and we will talk through your circumstances before any work starts.

They are the first set of annual statutory accounts a company prepares, covering the period from incorporation through to the company's first accounting reference date. They usually consist of a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, together with the notes and statements required by the reporting framework in use. They are prepared for the company's members and delivered to Companies House where required.

The due date depends on the company's incorporation date and its first accounting reference date, so it varies from one company to the next. For a first set of accounts the deadline is calculated from a different starting point than it is for later years, which is why it is worth checking the company's own Companies House record rather than relying on a general figure. If you are unsure of your dates, we can help you confirm them.

Usually the company's accounting records for the period: bank statements and transaction listings, sales invoices and income records, purchase invoices and expense receipts, details of any assets bought, director transactions and loans, share capital information, and payroll or VAT records where the company has them. Not every company will have all of these, particularly in a first period, and the list can be tailored to what has actually happened in the business.

In the ordinary course, a limited company must file statutory accounts with Companies House for each financial year, including its first. This applies whether the company has traded actively or not — limited or no activity does not remove the filing obligation, although what the accounts contain will depend on the circumstances. Whether a company is properly described as dormant is a separate question with its own conditions, so it should be looked at carefully rather than assumed. Directors in Bury St Edmunds are in the same position as directors elsewhere in the UK on this point.

No. First-year statutory accounts are prepared under company law and delivered to Companies House where required. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC where the company has Corporation Tax obligations. The figures in the accounts often feed into the tax return, but they are separate documents going to separate organisations, and completing one does not complete the other. A company's first Corporation Tax accounting period can also differ from its statutory accounts period.

It can, but not automatically. The micro-entity regime under FRS 105 is available to companies that satisfy the eligibility conditions for the relevant accounting period. Many smaller companies do qualify, but the test is based on the company's own circumstances and the applicable limits rather than on how recently it was incorporated. We can review your position and confirm which framework is appropriate before the accounts are prepared.

No. The confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing confirming that the company's registered information — directors, shareholders, registered office and similar details — is up to date. It runs on its own filing cycle and is not satisfied by delivering the annual accounts, so both should be tracked on the company's compliance calendar.

Failing to deliver the accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to consequences from Companies House, and the company remains obliged to file the outstanding accounts regardless of anything else that happens. Any penalty and any right of appeal depend on the applicable rules and the company's individual circumstances. If accounts are already overdue, it is generally best to deal with them promptly.
