First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Buckhurst: Prepared, Reviewed and Filed

A company’s first set of statutory accounts is a milestone, and it is worth getting the foundations right. Directors of newly incorporated limited companies in Buckhurst often have practical questions at this stage: which period the accounts cover, which records are needed, and what actually has to be delivered to Companies House. Micro Entity Accounts works with directors to prepare first year statutory accounts from the company’s accounting records, review the figures before anything is finalised, and file the accounts with Companies House where required. Where Corporation Tax applies, the accounting information can also support the company’s CT600 position — a separate submission to HMRC, with its own purpose and its own requirements. Transparent fees, straightforward explanations and support aimed squarely at new companies.

I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

Your first filing timeline

Incorporation

Your first filing timeline depends on your company's incorporation date and accounting reference date.

Accounting reference date

Set by default to the last day of the month of incorporation, one year on.

First accounts due

Normally 21 months after incorporation at Companies House.

First CT600 due

12 months after the end of the accounting period, with tax due earlier.

What Are First Year Accounts for a Micro Company and Why Do New Limited Companies Need Them?

First year accounts are the first set of statutory accounts a limited company prepares for its initial accounting period. They are not optional simply because the company is newly incorporated, and they are not the same thing as a tax return. For a company in Buckhurst, the work usually begins with the accounting records: bank transactions, sales and income records, purchase invoices, asset purchases, director transactions, share capital details and any loans or finance arrangements. Those records are used to produce a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, together with the notes and disclosures that the chosen reporting framework requires. The accounting period itself depends on the company’s incorporation date and its accounting reference date, so two companies incorporated in the same month can still have different first-period dates. First year accounts are generally delivered to Companies House where required. A confirmation statement is a separate filing and does not replace the accounts. If the company has Corporation Tax obligations, a CT600 is submitted to HMRC separately, and the company’s first Corporation Tax accounting period may not be identical to the period covered by the statutory accounts — the figures may feed into the tax position, but the two filings go to different bodies for different reasons. Some newly incorporated companies qualify as micro-entities and can prepare accounts under the micro-entity framework using FRS 105, the financial reporting standard applicable to qualifying entities. Eligibility depends on the applicable conditions for the relevant accounting period, so it should be checked rather than assumed. A company that does not meet the criteria may still report under the small-company framework, or may need to prepare fuller accounts, depending on its circumstances.

Does Your New Company Qualify as a Micro Entity?

Even in your first period, your company must meet the Companies House size criteria to file micro-entity accounts. A company generally needs to meet at least two of these three conditions.

Business Turnover

Annual Turnover of £1 Million or less. (£632,000 previously)

Balance Sheet

First Year Accounts for Limited Company in Buckhurst: Prepared Properly, Filed Where Required

The most common concern we hear from directors of newly incorporated companies is simple uncertainty — which period the first accounts cover, which records matter, whether the company qualifies for a simplified reporting framework, and what actually needs to go to Companies House. Micro Entity Accounts can take that work off your hands: reviewing your accounting records, preparing your first year statutory accounts, and filing them with Companies House where required. If your company also has Corporation Tax obligations, the same accounting information can support the figures behind a CT600 submitted to HMRC. Rather than spending your first accounting period trying to work out which rules apply to you, it is usually more efficient to have the accounts handled by someone who deals with them routinely — with clear pricing and no hidden costs.

They are the first set of annual statutory accounts prepared for a company's initial accounting period, covering the period from incorporation to the company's first accounting reference date. They typically include a balance sheet and, where applicable, a profit and loss account, plus any notes required by the reporting framework the company uses. First-year accounts are a Companies House matter and are separate from a Corporation Tax Return and from a confirmation statement.

Where a company is required to file statutory accounts, it must deliver them to Companies House for the relevant accounting period — even if it has been quiet or has not yet started trading. Very limited activity does not automatically remove that obligation. If the company has had no significant accounting transactions, its reporting position depends on its individual circumstances and the applicable rules, and whether it is genuinely dormant is a separate question worth confirming rather than assuming.

The answer depends on the company's incorporation date, its accounting reference date and the applicable Companies House requirements, so there is no single date that fits every new company. Companies House sets the first accounting reference date from the month of incorporation, and the first accounting period may run for longer than a standard twelve-month period. Because the calculation varies from company to company, it is better to confirm your own company's period and filing date than to rely on a general rule.

Usually bank statements and transaction records, sales and income records, purchase invoices and receipts, details of asset purchases, share capital information, director loan transactions, and any loans or finance agreements, along with payroll or VAT records where the company has them. Not every company will have all of these — a company with minimal activity will need a much shorter list. The more complete and organised the records, the more straightforward the preparation tends to be.

No. First-year statutory accounts are prepared under the applicable reporting framework and delivered to Companies House where required. A CT600 is a Corporation Tax Return submitted to HMRC, which is a separate filing for a separate purpose. The figures from the accounts are often used as a starting point when working out the company's Corporation Tax position, but filing one does not complete the other, and a company's first Corporation Tax accounting period may differ from the period covered by its statutory accounts.

Some can, but not automatically. Micro-entity status depends on meeting the eligibility conditions for the relevant accounting period, and those conditions relate to the size and nature of the company rather than simply being new or having low income. A qualifying company can use the micro-entity framework and FRS 105, the standard applicable to qualifying entities. Companies that do not qualify may report under the small-company framework or prepare fuller accounts, depending on their circumstances.

No, they are separate obligations. The confirmation statement is a Companies House filing that confirms the company's registered details — such as directors, registered office and share capital — remain correct. Delivering first-year statutory accounts does not satisfy that requirement, and filing a confirmation statement does not satisfy the accounts requirement. Companies in Buckhurst may need to keep both up to date, alongside any Corporation Tax or VAT obligations that apply to them.

Failing to deliver accounts by the applicable deadline can lead to consequences from Companies House, although the outcome is not identical in every case. Paying any penalty that arises does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts — they still need to be delivered. Where an appeal may be possible, eligibility depends on the specific circumstances and the applicable rules. Preparing the accounts ahead of the deadline is the most reliable way to avoid the issue altogether.
