He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Overdue Company Accounts Mean for Your Company

Company accounts generally have to be delivered to Companies House by the applicable statutory deadline for the accounting reference period. Once that date passes and the required accounts have not been filed, the accounts are treated as overdue. The deadline itself is not identical for every company — it depends on factors such as the company’s accounting reference date, whether it is a first set of accounts and the company’s particular circumstances, so the position should always be checked against the individual company record rather than assumed. Directors in Trafalgar who have missed a filing date often find that the outstanding accounts remain a live obligation until they are prepared and delivered, and that leaving them unaddressed tends to make the position more complicated rather than less. Companies House may apply a late-filing penalty when accounts arrive after the deadline, and the longer accounts remain outstanding, the more serious the consequences may become. Filing the accounts and settling any penalty are separate matters — delivering the outstanding accounts does not by itself cancel a penalty that has already been incurred. Where several accounting periods are outstanding, each period may need to be prepared and filed separately, and a company may also have unrelated obligations such as a confirmation statement, Corporation Tax matters or correspondence with HMRC to deal with. Some companies may have originally been required to prepare micro-entity accounts, small-company accounts or another applicable form of statutory accounts, depending on their size and reporting framework, and that determination should be made on the facts rather than on the assumption that a small company automatically qualifies. Micro Entity Accounts can review what is outstanding, confirm what needs to be prepared and assist with bringing the company’s filing record up to date.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

It means the filing deadline for a particular accounting period has passed and the required accounts have not yet been delivered to Companies House. The accounts remain outstanding until they are properly prepared and filed. Being overdue is a filing position rather than a separate legal status — the company is still registered, but the outstanding obligation is still there and needs to be addressed.

Yes. Once an accounting period has ended and accounts were required, that obligation does not disappear because the deadline has passed. The accounts still need to be prepared and delivered to Companies House where required. Depending on the circumstances, there may also be a late-filing penalty to deal with, which is a separate matter from the requirement to file.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are two separate issues. A dormant company can still have annual accounts filing obligations, and if those accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, the filing becomes overdue. Dormant status does not automatically remove the requirement to file, although the form of accounts a dormant company needs to prepare can differ from a trading company's.

Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline. The penalty depends on the circumstances and how late the filing is, so it is not the same for every company. Paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts, and the two matters should be treated separately.

In many cases, yes, but each outstanding period generally needs its own set of accounts prepared and filed. Filing one period does not automatically resolve the others. We can review the company's Companies House record to establish which periods are outstanding and then work through them in order, subject to the information available for each period.

Not automatically. However, Companies House may take action against companies that fail to meet their filing obligations, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of compulsory strike-off action. Where a company has already received a warning or a strike-off notice, the position may require separate advice, and filing overdue accounts does not guarantee that any action already started will be stopped.

Possibly, where the company qualifies for the micro-entity framework. Eligibility depends on the company's size, legal structure and accounting period, and not every small company qualifies. Where the micro-entity framework applies, FRS 105 is the financial reporting standard used. We can assess whether micro-entity accounts are appropriate or whether another reporting framework should be used.

No. Statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required, while Corporation Tax Returns such as CT600 are submitted to HMRC where applicable, and a confirmation statement is a separate Companies House filing in its own right. Filing overdue accounts does not automatically satisfy those other obligations, so where a company also has outstanding Corporation Tax or confirmation statement matters, they need to be dealt with separately.
