We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.

I have really impressed to date with all dealings with Accotax highly enough. From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Makes Company Accounts Overdue, and Why It Pays to Deal With Them Early

Company accounts become overdue when the filing deadline for a particular accounting reference period has passed and the required statutory accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. That deadline is not the same for every company. It depends on the accounting reference date, the length and type of accounting period being reported on, and the company’s own circumstances — including whether it is filing for the first time or has previously changed its year end. Directors of limited companies in Rossendale carry the same responsibility as directors elsewhere in the UK: the annual accounts need to be prepared, reviewed, authorised and filed, and that duty does not fall away simply because the company has stopped trading, has no income, or is dormant. Outstanding accounts also tend to become harder to prepare the longer they are left, because records, bank statements and invoices are more difficult to trace and prior-year figures need to be reconciled. Where more than one accounting period has been missed, each period may need to be prepared and delivered separately, and the company may have other outstanding obligations, such as a confirmation statement or a Corporation Tax Return, that sit outside the accounts filing itself. Bringing overdue company accounts up to date generally means establishing exactly what is outstanding, gathering the relevant financial records, preparing the accounts under the reporting framework that applies to the company, obtaining the director’s approval, and submitting them to Companies House. The consequences of late delivery, and any late-filing penalty that may apply, depend on the circumstances and on how overdue the accounts are, so it is worth reviewing the position rather than assuming the worst or leaving matters to drift.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Company accounts are overdue when the statutory filing deadline for a given accounting reference period has passed and the required accounts have not been delivered to Companies House. The applicable deadline varies between companies and depends on factors such as the accounting reference date, whether it is a first set of accounts, and the length of the period being reported on. If you are unsure whether your accounts are late, we can check the position on the Companies House record for your company.

Yes. In most cases the obligation to prepare and deliver the accounts remains, and it does not disappear because the original deadline has passed. The accounts still need to be prepared under the reporting framework that applies to your company and delivered to Companies House where required. Filing with Companies House is separate from any Corporation Tax Return due to HMRC, so bringing the accounts up to date does not automatically settle other outstanding obligations the company may have.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues. A dormant company can still be required to prepare and file annual accounts with Companies House, and if it failed to meet the relevant deadline, those accounts will be overdue. Dormant status does not by itself remove the filing requirement, so the deadline and the Companies House record should be checked before assuming nothing is due.

Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline, and the level of any penalty depends on how late the accounts are and on the company's circumstances. Persistent non-compliance can also increase the risk of further action by Companies House, although not every late filing leads to the same outcome. Filing the accounts as soon as they are ready is generally better than continuing to delay.

Yes. Paying a penalty and filing the outstanding accounts are separate matters, and settling a penalty does not remove or replace the requirement to deliver the accounts. The penalty relates to the late delivery itself, while the accounts still have to be prepared and submitted. Where an appeal is being considered, eligibility depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules.

Where several periods have been missed, each outstanding accounting period may need to be prepared and filed separately, and the figures for one period often depend on the position carried forward from the previous one. We can review the Companies House record, identify the periods involved and work through them in sequence, subject to the records being available. Filing one set of accounts does not automatically resolve the others.

It depends on the stage the company has reached. Companies House may take action against companies that fail to meet their filing obligations, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of compulsory strike-off, but an overdue filing does not mean every company will be dissolved. Filing overdue accounts does not guarantee that strike-off action will be halted or reversed. If a strike-off notice has been received, or the company has already been dissolved, the matter may need separate advice, potentially including restoration or legal input rather than a straightforward accounts filing.

We can review what is outstanding, confirm which accounting periods need to be addressed, prepare the overdue accounts under the appropriate reporting framework and assist with delivery to Companies House once you have reviewed and authorised the figures. Where relevant, we can also look at related matters such as a confirmation statement, HMRC correspondence or a CT600 Corporation Tax Return, since these are dealt with separately from the statutory accounts. Our pricing is transparent and fixed-fee based, and all work is carried out by accountants regulated by ICAEW, ACCA and AAT.
