I worked with Accotx on a HMRC reclaim and overall, they did ultimately deliver on their promise, which I appreciate. The process did take longer than any of us expected, partly due to external delays with the tax authorities, and partly because there were some hiccups in communication and follow-up. However, despite those challenges, they stayed professional and stuck to the original agreed terms. If you’re considering using them, be prepared to stay in regular contact to keep things moving along. They are absolutely capable, have the expertise and willing to work with you, and overall improving their services over time. I would certainly return for any future needs.

─── OVERDUE ACCOUNTS EXPLAINED

What Overdue Company Accounts Mean for Your Company

Company accounts become overdue when the statutory filing deadline for a set of accounts has passed and those accounts have not yet been delivered to Companies House. The deadline itself is not the same for every company — it is generally calculated from the end of the relevant accounting reference period, and factors such as a company’s first accounts, a change to its accounting reference date or its individual circumstances can affect when the filing is actually due. Once that date has gone by without the accounts being submitted, the filing is outstanding, and the obligation to prepare and deliver the accounts does not disappear simply because the deadline has been missed. Directors in Snaith and elsewhere in the country often find themselves in this position after a busy trading period, a change of accountant, illness, or simply losing track of correspondence from Companies House, and it is worth addressing the position sooner rather than later. The longer accounts remain outstanding, the more the situation can develop: Companies House may impose a late-filing penalty when the accounts are eventually delivered, and persistent non-compliance can increase the risk of further action being taken against the company. The appropriate form of accounts also depends on the company — an overdue period may have originally required micro-entity accounts, small-company accounts or another applicable reporting framework, and that needs to be confirmed before preparation begins. Where a company has several accounting periods outstanding, each one generally needs to be dealt with separately. Getting a clear picture of what is owed, what has already been filed and what still needs to be prepared is usually the most useful first step.

─── Why Choose Us

How Much Are Companies House Late Filing Penalties?

Penalties escalate the longer your accounts stay unfiled, and they double if your company also filed late in the previous financial year. Acting now is the single most effective way to cap what you owe.

HMRC applies separate penalties for late Corporation Tax Returns, starting at £100 per return plus interest on unpaid tax. Companies House late-filing penalties can change, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for the latest penalty rules.

Behind on Your Company Accounts? Let Us Get the Filing Back on Track

Overdue accounts are more common than many directors expect, and they are usually more straightforward to resolve than they feel when you are the one dealing with the reminders. Micro Entity Accounts can review your outstanding filing position, prepare the accounts for each affected accounting period, and assist with delivery to Companies House so that your records are brought up to date. We will explain what is still required, what information we need from you, and how any separate matters such as confirmation statements or Corporation Tax filing fit into the picture. Speak to our team about your company’s position and we will set out the next practical steps.

It means the statutory filing deadline for a set of accounts has passed and those accounts have not yet been delivered to Companies House. The accounts themselves do not cease to be required — the company still has an obligation to prepare and file them. The exact deadline depends on the company's accounting reference period and its particular circumstances, so it is worth confirming the position rather than assuming.

Yes. Dormancy and overdue filing are separate issues. A dormant company can still have annual accounts filing obligations, and if the required accounts were not delivered by the applicable deadline, those accounts are overdue. Dormant status on its own does not remove the filing requirement, although the form the accounts take may differ from a trading company's.

Companies House can impose a late-filing penalty when accounts are delivered after the applicable deadline. The level of any penalty depends on how late the accounts are and the company's circumstances, so we cannot state a figure in advance. Paying a penalty does not remove the requirement to file the outstanding accounts — the two matters are separate, and the accounts still have to be prepared and delivered.

Not automatically. Whether a penalty can be appealed or reduced depends on the circumstances and the applicable Companies House rules, and eligibility is assessed case by case. We can review your position and explain whether an appeal may be worth considering, but no outcome can be guaranteed.

Where several accounting periods are outstanding, each one generally needs its own set of accounts prepared and filed. Filing one set does not automatically clear the others, and the order in which they are dealt with can matter. We can map out exactly which periods remain outstanding and work through them in sequence.

No. Statutory accounts are delivered to Companies House where required, while a Corporation Tax Return such as the CT600 is submitted to HMRC where applicable. Filing overdue accounts with Companies House does not satisfy an outstanding Corporation Tax obligation, so if both are overdue they need to be addressed as separate compliance matters.

It may be possible, but a strike-off notice or an already-dissolved company is not an ordinary overdue filing situation. It may require separate action or legal advice, and filing accounts does not guarantee that strike-off action will be halted or reversed. It is best to seek advice quickly rather than delay further.

It depends on the accounting period and the company's circumstances, but typically we would ask for bookkeeping records, bank statements, invoices, expense records, details of any assets or liabilities, previous accounts where available, and current company information. The exact list varies, and we will confirm what is needed once we understand your position. If you are unsure, we can start with a review of your outstanding filing requirements.
